OT: I've been playing the StarCraft 2 beta. This game's going to give ME2 a run for its money for GOTY, for sure.
So fun, so competative, there's just a few minor balance issues, and this might be the perfect RTS.
Maybe for you. Not for me. I refuse to buy any of the Starcraft 2 games until all three campaigns are available in one collection; add to that some of the online limitations and I begin to hear the DRM clarions go off (then again I never gave a wooden nickel about Starcraft multiplayer; multiplayer in general disinterests me). As it stands I'm not going to buy Starcraft 2 at all. I detest what Activision has become and they are going to have to do a lot to convince me to spend money on their products.
I dislike people using the three campaign arguments against the game. They had 2 expansions planned anyways. The only thing that changed was, instead of getting three half baked campaigns per game, you get 1 fully fleshed out race campaign per game. More than likely the two other campaigns will be priced as expansion packs. (probably $30) as they only feature a campaign and a couple new units per race for multiplayer. Just because you don't want to pay for more content, doesn't mean other people are more than willing.
If yo prefered them to keep it all to one campaign, well then, thats just unrealistic. All these modern RTS games have expansions these days, and expansions are enormous profits for the company. There's little reason for them not take advantage of the opportunity.
I hate activision as much as the next guy, but they aren't to blame for anything Blizzard is doing here. The only online limitation is the inability to choose your gateway. Which I can partially understand as it greatly limits lag and I'm certainly not going to talk down a company for trying (it won't work) to prevent piracy. They're still trying to figure out what do do with lan. Its possible, it might be in, but require that every lan player logs in to verify their copy. The only DRM the game has is that you need to be online the first time you install the game, and a cd key.
Now, I come to " (then again I never gave a wooden nickel about Starcraft
multiplayer; multiplayer in general disinterests me)" and I must say this isn't the game for you then. Which is fine, its not for everyone. They've certainly made strides to make it more accessible though. To be honest, I'm not sure why you're weighing in on this, if you don't like multiplayer.
On a side note, someone says we don't know if its competative yet, I agree, it hasn't been out long enough to judge that yet, but this is Blizzard we're talking about here. Hell, they released a patch for the original starcraft like 6 months ago. And that game has been out for 11 or 12 years. They are certainly dedicated to the competative aspect of their games, with the exception of WoW, but we won't go there. (talking more diablo/starcraft/warcraft teams)
