iNixiRir has it right. Our biology looks for certain features in potential mates. Of course it is not the rule, and society often has a large part in deciding or influencing what a person finds attractive.

Also. I went on a weight gaining diet, because I thought I looked way too skinny and the twiggy-ness of my arms was making me feel self-conscious. Well. For the whole 5 months I was on the diet and feeling disgustingly full I had no one to talk to because most of my friends would like to lose weight instead of gain it...but you know something? Gaining weight is really damn hard too! And you totally feel like you're gonna burst at the seams 24 hours a day! And not to mention, getting information on how to do it was really hard. It's not as simple as "eat whatever you want!" there's a lot to it. Because I was eating a lot and not gaining any weight for the longest time.

But all anyone ever seems to wanna do is "lose those 40 pounds!" "trim that waist!" "lose that fat!" the market for those that don't wanna look like twigs is non-existant.

I've seen some of those runway models and some of them just look wholly unattractive. Malnourished and anorexic is not attractive.

Hips imply the fertility of a woman(breasts/ass/waist also). The hips of a woman grow at puberity - meaning that's she's ready to get pregnant. Most men are attracted to that because, you know, of our hormones. We humans reproduces to keep our race alive.

The appearance of a post-pubescent human female's hips are one of the signals that males of the species pick up on, informing us that the female is physically prepared to... spawn.

9 times out of 10 when a girl tells me she needs to lose weight she already looks damn fine.

Well some of us do need to lose weight 

It's tough to gain lean mass.  It's also tough to lose fat and maintain lean mass.  That's why people that drop 40 pounds really fast look "skinny-fat".  Nastiness.   Tali is a good model.    Lean, but just enough in the trunk.

Usually the ones who vocally say they do, don't... It's those other ones with the doughut in their mouths that do, clearly the dougnut is stopping them both from voicing it, and losing weight.

Depends.  Some people gain it very easily.
I'm like you.  I found that the way to gain weight is to work out, believe it or not.  If you have a very high rest metabolism, it will be difficult or impossible to eat enough to add weight.  Instead you have to eat protein and then turn it into body mass by adding muscle.
However, plenty of people have low rest metabolism.  If they eat a slice of cake, every single milligram of sugar gets packed up and put away as fat by their insulin mechanism, instead of being used up in metabolic processes.  If those people eat enough sugar (which is easy, considering the amount of corn syrup in nearly everything), they get overweight and eventually develop insulin resistance (type 2 diabetes).

This. The reason why most man(there are always the sick ones) aren't attracted to children is because they don't have the right proportions. No breasts, waist and hips implies that the woman isn't ready for reproduction - thus 'useless' for a man. Some men also say about women without hips/breasts/waist that she has the body of a man - thus unattractive.
 Tali has wide hips - thin waist and breasts(not the ideal proportions though - but those are details about 0.7 blabla - not important) - thus having an attractive body.

It also shouldn't matter if a woman is thin or not - because it's all about the proportions of the body. Anorexic women don't really got any proportions so they aren't seen as attractive.
