I asked earlier if we had a choice in the matter who would you like to see Tali modeled after in ME3 a lot of people wanted Liz Sroka herself and some disagreed but we also had Chiasa Aonum, Summer Glau, Olivia Wilde, and Morena Baccarin Suggested. Anyone else have any other models or actresses/singers or famous females they would like to see take on that role?

Nicole De Boer  would make a good Tali[smilie]http://social.bioware.com/images/forum/emoticons/love.png[/smilie] i thinkhttp://www.spookyweb.de/startrek/pd_ezr12.jpg

This is of course, provided their species has natural solar radiation protection in the form of a melanin-like substance.  If they do, I would expect to see Quarians of different shades.

Then again, 300 years on starships, without unprotected UV exposure... might all be nearly albino, by now.

Two things to point out:

First of all, Rannoch's star is more orange than Sol, and hence emits less UV radiation.  It is possible that they do not especially need natural UV protection, and that whatever skin pigment they have serves a different purpose.

Second, even if their pigment DOES protect against UV, this does not imply that they would lose that pigment if they are not being exposed to sunlight.  Humans who live in less sunny environments do not lose skin pigment simply because they don't need it, they lose skin pigment because of vitamin D deficiency.  UV light helps your body manufacture vitamin D, and having a lot of melanin in a place with relatively low sun keeps you from making enough of it.

Basically, they'd only get more pale if their pigment is an active detriment in low-sun environments.  Otherwise there is no biological or selective pressure to get rid of skin pigment.

This was a couple of pages back, but forgive me, I was showering/eating/mighta fell asleep a bit.

To address your points, keep in mind that I am forced to assume a biochemical makeup and environmental/physiological relationship eerily similar to our own for all my suppositions.

It's entirely feasible that Quarians are so contrary to what we know to be true on our own planet, so strange to our common knowledge, so alien that none of this is even close to the marker.  However I posit that it is FAR more likely that the dominant species of the galaxy would share similar relationships with the basic forces of the universe such as UV and its safeguards, than the likelihood that they would be morphologically similar.  Which most of them are.  Staggeringly so.
I mean, c'mon?  Turian, Quarian, Human, Asari, Salarian, Krogan.  All vertebrate, bipedal, bilaterally symmetric, sexually dimorphic, oxygen-atmosphere respirating humanoids, among a host of other similarities.  And yet despite all of these similarities I am expected to believe that their basic environmental defense mechanisms are beyond taking a rough stab at?  Suspension of disbelief only goes so far.

Given that we know almost beyond a shadow of a doubt that Quarians are mammal analogues, some assumptions can reasonably be made.  One is that they breastfeed (or did in their past) their live-birthed young.  Another is that they most likely have hair covering the majority of their bodies.
Yet another is that they have something akin to a melanin-like substance within their bodies that protects against solar radiation, yes even from an orange star that gives off more IR than UV.  Even if in smaller amounts, it still gives off UV.  UV is bad for your health when not taken in moderation.

Their being mammals (or an analogue) reinforces my surety that they posses a melanin-like substance, because as you pointed out in response to my joking point about them turning albino within a mere 300 years (wasn't srs, I promise) melanin is an adaptive defense mechanism.

If your ancestors are exposed to too much UV over time, gradually throughout the generations the melanin levels will rise, leading to darker pigment, as vitamin D production is no longer an issue: radiation is.
If exposed to too little, the body lacks vitamin D and lowers the pigment levels through the generations to compensate.

It is this kind of adaptability in our environmental defenses that has led to mammals living almost everywhere on our planet.  Underwater, in the arctic, in a forest, on a savanna.
As one can reasonably assume that Quarians are space-mammals, I assert that it is not unreasonable to also assume that they share a similar environmental adaptability to our own, it is after all a mammal trademark.

An environmental adaptation such as protection from the intergalactic death-rays that are constantly being flung hither and yon seems pretty basic to me.  Far more basic than bipedalism, live young, mammary glands, etc.

But if you're just hung up on it being called "melanin" and being involved in the production of "vitamin D" then by all means consider it named "belanin" and it aids in the production of "substance X".  :?

EDIT:  Completely missed your second point, forgive me I'm tired and this is far too long as it is.  I'll just throw it out quick, that I consider being confined within a suit most of your life aboard a starship to be a pretty low-UV type of condition.  And IF "belanin" is necessary for Quarians to produce "substance X" I don't think it unreasonable to assume that skin pigmentation will gradually lighten as the years go by.
Then again, they are a race of spacefaring engineers, they've probably got some awesome tanning bed tech installed in their suits if it is indeed necessary.

I know. I know. I know.

I've been on this forum for weeks, and I've repeated myself many times;

The face underneath the in-game model is a place-holder.

That is not her face, it was never meant to be her face, it's there for convenience. Worthy of note is that all quarian characters have the same exact model underneath the mask. The only difference is that Tali's eyes are detailed much more than the rest. The nose is still up in the air wether or not it should actually be there. We, the audience, does not know what they look like, and we are not meant to know until possibly later. Bioware's very own Casy Hudson has stated that they now know what is under the mask.

Good day, sirs.
