I dunno about Drell, or especially Batarians. Having snake scales and black sclera in their eyes is pretty alien. Having four eyes and needle-teeth os even more so. I agree, they are human in form, but something tells me that if Quarians were even remotely as alien-looking as Thane, a lot of people would be upset.Phil725 wrote...
I said this earlier, but it bears repeating. Between the toes, fingers, legs, immune system, eyes and ears, quarians are already more alien in appearance than asari, batarians and drell.
What evidence, exactly?I think people who are expecting some kind of exotic alien are going to be disappointed. Every piece of evidence we find makes Tali seem more and more human.

I'm not saying I want her to look bizarre, I'm just wondering. We know she has a human-shaped face... eyes, lips, nose, brow ridge, cheek bones, correct proportions. We know she has a fairly human body, with generally correct proportions, hips, and breasts. But those are all big details. It leaves a lot of interpretation of the details open, and details are what define a lot of the races. Both Drell and Asari have very human faces, but are also very different from each other. She isn't going to look like a Krogan, but they haven't given enough evidence to say that she will look almost entirely human, either.

I agree with tykfa1990.
As far as point 1 of the two points you made, I agree, but I think it's safe to say that all of this is speculation on our parts--happily ever after, white-picket fence, and all that.
I can see Shepard and Tali have numerous trials if they are determined to have a life together. I can see hardspots on the road, easy. For as much crap as Shepard as gone through, this could be (strangely enough) one of the hardest things he will ever do in his life.
(1) I can see objections from the Admiralty Board. And though I think we all know what Tali would think about their opinions ("If they have a problem with it, they can go to hell."), I still think that would play out interestingly.
(2) Then you have what the world might think. And though we shouldn't care about what others think of us, there is sure to be flak regardless if we care about it or not.
That's just the easy part.
(3) The differences in genetic make-up are truly something difficult for humans to comprehend on the spot. We, as humans, grew up in the natural world and are therefore so use to using our five senses that we are, ironically, dull to them. Even when we "Stop and smell the roses," we don't actually "stop and smell them," as it were. What I mean by that is that we don't stop to appreciate the fact that we can simply just smell--smell a rose, or our favorite meal. We say, "Oh that smells wonderful," but we don't stop to think, "I CAN smell, this truly a blessing."--Am I making sense? And EVERY other alien race can do the same thing--even the Turians. They can't eat the same food as us, but they can still smell, and touch, and see the world with their own eyes.
Quarians are the only race that can't do this. Even though I knew Tali was trapped in her suit, I never stopped to think about she IS TRAPPED in that suit. Sure Tali says, "If I don't wear a helmet in my own home, I die. A single kiss could put me in the hospital..."
She is talking about how she can't so much as smell a flower, and then she damns the Pilgrimage, because if she never went, she would have never known what she was missing.
Tali is saying these things to me, and I found that wasn't truly listening or comprehending what she was saying. This did not hit me until I saw her father lying on the floor dead. She ran over to him and began to cry.
I'm going to repeat that:
Tali ran over to her father's body and began to cry...
THAT's when it hit me. "Holy crap!" I thought. "She can't even so much as wipe away the tears from her own face..."
And when I comforted her, I thought about how her helmet was between her and my shoulder. She couldn't even cry into my shoulder. But then I was also wearing armor there, so that kind of evens it out (and it killed the mood I was working so hard to set up--uh, moving on! LOL!). But do you see what I'm saying? And besides, even if I personally wasn't wearing armor, her helmet would still be in the way.
Tali'Zorah cannot smell, she cannot touch, she cannot feel.
I love how soft my bed is, and how soft my Shetland sheepdogs are when I pet them. I love the feeling of a cool breeze. I love the smell of Italian food.
I can remember commenting on how good something smelled--we do it without thinking; we can't help it. Then I remembered thinking, "How would I like it if everyday, or every other day, or whenever, if someone said their meal smelled good, but I couldn't smell at all because of an environment suit? If I listened to someone say that every day or every other day, how would I like it? Or if it's a hot day, and then there's a cool breeze, and that someone says 'Oh that feels good,' and I can see the wind blowing in their hair." My suit may keep me comfortable, but I think would still desire to feel that difference.
Here's a good one. What does she do when her nose itches? What if her nose is runny? What if she feels like she going to be sick? What would Tali do in that situation and she was not in a clean room?
(I know this is getting a little TMI maybe, but think about it.)
We don't have to worry about these things; we just do what comes naturally. There's nothing to hinder us, or worry us.
Quarians also have to approach social situations very differently than we do. We can enjoy the smile of another, or how their eyes light up when they're excited. Or even a cold or frightened look in simply the eyes of another.
Heck, ordinary people can read the subtlest of facial expressions. Quarians can do none of these things because there is no face to read. They have to convey what they're feeling in other ways. They also must do the same thing when showing affection.
Heck I was just wondering what would happen (even though it's been done), what would REALLY happen if a human and a quarian kiss. With different genetics and amino-acids comes different bacteria. The exchange of saliva during a kiss is inevitable. If you swallow it, (and I'm sure you will) would you get cramps or something? The same goes for the human. Mordin does mention something on the subject, and Tali only spoke of what sounded like flu-like symptoms. So maybe it's not a huge deal. But I still can't help but think.
I think I've devoted more than enough of this to the major differences in Quarians and then other species. But it still feels like I haven't covered half of it. Sheesh, I guess it's time to just move on.
So here's the situation. Let's say you are Shepard. Are you willing to put up with all of this and more? How much are you willing to give up for the one you love? Giving up things works on both ends, but a human may have to give up more. And PLEASE don't misunderstand me, I don't mean your sense of smell, your favorite meal, or anything like that necessarily. That's being a little unreasonable. And most quarians are too selfless to ask such things of us--in fact, I don't think there are many people in general who would ask such things of us.
This is where you really have to accept your differences and push through no matter what. If you know deep down inside that this quarian/human is the one for you until you're old and grey, and then until you die.
Are you willing to go through what would be undoubtedly one of the hardest trials of your life?
This is what true love is--selflessness. Not because it's what makes us feel good or because it suits us; that's merely one of the results of what love is.
"Yes, I'm willing to go through the all the trials. Yes, I'm willing to set what I want aside for you. I don't care if we can't have children together, we can adopt! I'm willing to sit by your side at the hospital and hold your hand and do whatever it takes to help you, even if we do it a million times over in the course of our lives.
I don't care what others think. I don't care if we can't be as intimate as others all the time. There are many different forms of intimacy anyway. So long as I have you, that's all that matters. Etc., etc., etc."
Maybe you as Shepard could show interest in Tali and ask her about Quarian social customs and the like. I'm sure she would be more than happy to teach you. Of course, this is all speculation, remember. All of this doesn't really need to be in the game, naturally--there's no way. This is just the idea of afterwards.
Nevertheless, I think Bioware should address some of these issues for continued relationships, esp. in Tali's case. Their LI-plots are going to have to be VERY different from what they were in games 1 and 2.
I personally would be willing to go through all the troubles and hard work for Tali. I wouldn't think twice.
Heck, if it really (and I mean REALLY) comes to it, I would let her go if it's best, no matter how much it hurts. Love is sacrifice for others; it's doing what's best for someone, even if you're not a part of it. Under any other circumstances I would pursue someone like Tali to the ends of the earth. Does all of this make sense?
THAT is what love truly is.
(Of course, that last part especially is getting a little too literal, and it doesn't have to come to that [and I can't see that it ever will], esp. since this is a fictitious character [and a game] we're talking about here. Heh, heh. Just want to establish that I'm not insane, I just tend to get a little literal when it comes to a rich character such as this one. I have never met such a rich and convincingly life-like character such as Tali'Zorah in a video game ever before.)
