In the book "Mass Effect: Ascension" there is a passage which describes a Quarian that has been tortured to death by Cerberus agents. Part of the description mentions what appears to be the equivalent of "ears" but that they look more like holes.

actually, all it says is "what passed for the quarian version of an ear"

Which thus implies that they likely have some sort of fleshy bit that one could call an ear, but it is likely nothing like out ears.

I never fully understood why people thought quarians were purple/violet either.

Its mostly because of the suit and visor.  For the same reason that I look at the head scarves as evidence that they have human-like hair.  It seems likely to me that quarians would craft their suits in a way that represents their actual appearance.

Also from a developmental standpoint, Bioware will get complaints about making Tali "too human," no matter what they do.  Giving her a human skin tone would add to those complaints, when making her purple is a small change that people wouldn't have a problem with (unlike say, 4 nostrils.)

I sometimes get tired of all the assumptions people make about how Tali "Should Look" Because of what they think they know or what they have seen from in game play. Its a F*cking video game. She can look how ever bioware permits. she could have a full head of hair or human like ears. i mean c'mon when it all comes down to it we haven't the slightest clue what she looks like and suggesting things based on ME fiction doesn't make it true lol. also, maybe her eyes don't glow? maybe that area of her mask highlights the eyes so she can see better or something o.O

We definitely don't know anything about Tali for sure, everything said is pure conjecture.  Doesn't mean we can't speculate in the meantime.  We're running low on Tali topics as it is

It's also better without the face marking. Although I like this idea, there's just something...off about it. I'm not sure what it is, but something just doesn't seem right whenever I look at it.

oh yea all kinds of fun to speculate lol no argument there. but have you heard some of the arguments? people get really into it and want to force their opinions on everyone about how Tali looks because of some random in game facts they decide must make the outcome lol.
