I hope it isn't as violent as I fear it could be.
Honestly I think the most realistic depiction is in the movie 'Contact' (one of my favorites), but the way first contact was made in that movie is much different than simply having an alien land on Earth.  It will depend highly on the nature of our first interactions.  Regardless, though, there will be a big mixture of different religious and philosophical reactions, with attitudes ranging from fear to awe and wonder.

There has to be something out there. I mean, I can't imagine anything more lonely than being alone in the universe. That's just so. . .depressing. While our solar system might be empty, who's to say there might not be someone living right next door?
I'll tell you one thing, if we ever get an Alliance military in MY lifetime, I'm signing my ass right up for that.

I don't expect to, nor do I deserve to. Still, that doesn't mean I can't be an astronomer, and observe the awesomeness from a distance. <3

I think we both meant finding someone (human) with similar qualities to Tali: charm, awkwardness, intelligence, personality, etc. We all (well, most of us) know that Tali isn't real; she's a character in a video game. But it's her spirit and the person she is that has so many people adoring her. Some say she's perfect in every way, but I respectfully disagree; it's her imperfections that make her 'perfect', the type of person we could all fall in love with and who we would want to spend the rest of our short lives with. She is the embodiment of perfection through imperfection.

To answer your question, though, have you ever seen Farscape? There are two very good episodes that show two possible routes humanity could go: fear, separation, and study, or acceptance and understanding. I believee the path we take will be determined by how our society has evolved at that point. We make our future with our actions today.

A short story written by Patrick Weekes, one of BioWare's writers, in an old Tali thread, regarding Shepard trying to find an xmas gift for Tali.

i can imagine shepard's first christmas with tali onboard being really awkward. first he gets a box of chocolates for his little shotgun-toting engineer buddy, but then garrus mentions that quarians are amino-dextrous, so the chocolate would kill her.

shepard then remembers her love for both tech and shotguns and ponies up for the best shotgun on the market, along with anti-synthetic ammo mods. he drops by wrex to have him check them out, only to have wrex mention that during one of their elevator rides, tali mentioned her pride in her tech and salvage skills, such that she'd rather make weapons than buy them, and would never like a purchased weapon for a present. wrex then adds that that's an awfully big box of chocolates, and wrex would be happy to hang onto both it and the new shotgun while shepard figures out a new gift for tali.

at this point, shepard says "screw it!" and gets her a gift card at omni-gel emporium. just as he's about to sneak it into tali's stocking (one of six hung up over the galaxy map, one of two with the big toe-sleeves, and the only toe-sleeved one that doesn't have "garrus vakarian" stitched on it, with "spectre" stitched under it and then crossed out with "c-sec officer" stitched under that, in turn also crossed out with "galactic bada" stitched at the bottom and clearly not quite finished in time for christmas), shepard hears joker laughing about the system they've just passed, which has survey teams selling planetary rights to barely habitable worlds for cheap. and shepard remembers tali's stories about what happened with the geth, and how her people are homeless, driven from their world.

in the morning, as they all gather in c&c to unwrap presents, tali is confused by the wrapped box that contains nothing but a card... until she realizes how hard it is to wrap a new homeworld.

(liara is, by the way, really touched by shepard's thoughtfulness in getting her that omni-gel gift card.)
