This is due to unusual button-mapping: Regardless of which location is highlighted in the menu, on the xBox pressing (A) saves the Industrial Area, while pressing (saves the Residential District, and on the PC selecting "Save the Industrial Area" saves the Residential District and vice versa. However, while the journal lists the opposite area as being saved, the mission report lists the option chosen by the player. Also, after choosing which target to save, the game locks you in this mission forever.
Hope that helps
Thanks, yet I've just sent an e-mail to one of the BioWare staff members describing the bug for good measure.

I was off in ME land playing ME2. I just confirmed a bug in ME2. The N7 mission where you re-take the Franklin Alliance Javeling missile base from Batarians that have launched two missiles at the Watson colony, whichever option you select the opposite will happen! In other words, if you opt to save the residential area and the hundreds or thousands of colonists then then the game will think you saved the military/industrial sector which allows for the continue strategic viability of the colony. If you choose to save the military/industrial sector then the game will think you chose to save the residential area which will save the lives of the colonists but will result in the evacuation of the entire colony as it is no longer sustainable.
My Shep is more renegade than paragon but even he wouldn't sacrifice the lives of so many innocents. That would just be mean.
See, my Shepard is a reflection of me and thus is a Paragon with the odd occassional Renegade action. On my first playthrough I was genuinely torn over that mission decision. There are sound arguments for either choice. Eventually I opted to save the colony or so I thought. I later discovered that in my completed mission log it showed up as though I had chosen to save the industrial area. I just played that mission on my second play through and this time I thought about it some more and chose to save the industrial sector. I noticed that it said "several hundred lives" whereas on my first play through I thought it said "several hundreds of thousands of lives".
Callous? Possibly, however given that our decisions have long term consequences and that habitable planets with viable colonies are limited (and the Watson colony is the only one of its size in the Sigurd system,) the long-term planning, pragmatic strategist in me would say that in the grand scheme of things the tragic loss of several hundred people is justifiable if it allows for a planet to become a new hub of human civilization and expansion. Still, my humanistic side recognizes that it's easy for me to say sitting safe and sound behind my monitor without a direct personal stake in the matter. The hundreds of people and their families in the Watson colony may not all share my more pragmatic sentiments. It's a brilliant example of BioWare forcing us to make an unhappy choice in a bad situation; either way we lose something highly valuable and we have to choose between the short term pay off vs. the long term pay off....I hope I'm never actually placed in a situation where I'd have to choose because from a leadership position I lean towards saving the backbone of the colony infrastructure that would allow us to settle new families and continue the growth of the colony....even if it means sacrificing hundreds of lives.
Well mate, I believe that the decision is relative to our own roles within the context. Shepard is no longer part of the vast and complex system of colonzation and stretegic planning. In fact, as grand and far-reaching as these issues may see it pales in comparison to the greater political picture. Shepard must act in the interests of innicent life of all races as opposed to the machinations of those in power. On the flip side of the coin, the military industrial complex of that colony could very well be conquered and used by a future enemy, posing even more problems for mankind's colonial efforts.
In the end the endless wherefores and whatnots matter little to those with such a relatively minute lifespan as humans. Only that which is petinent to the present, to the here and now, can apply in most situations. this applies to renegade actions as well, of course. Sometimes you have to punch a guy in the face you get him out of the way as any delay will risk innocent life. It isn't pleasant but then again being the saviour of a galaxy never is.
Anyway, I digress. The preservation of innocent life is something that will always be favoured by myself. A choice between a hundred and a thousand is no choice at all. All we can do is do what are instincts tell us and, if you're the sort, pray.
funny about the bug though

I don't know about you, but an infiltrator with Engineering / Biotic skills sounds pretty Nerdy to me too. Personally I think Nerds / Geeks ...you know people with brains are the true rulers of the world.
Besides, its good to interact with another nerd, especially the female kind. Its all about interfacing and the transfer of data.
This is why i've chosen Sentinel for my third playtrough.
"O hi Tali I r have tech skills now too
Plus, the tech armor is quite helpfull.

I do not disagree with your sentiments; the mirror my own even while the more Realist pragmatic voice whispers in my ear. The "here and now" concept was in fact what caused me to save the residential area the first time because it was one of those rare occasions where you could make a real difference right then and there. Besides, perhaps one of those colonists will go on to do great things or one of their descendants, but as you state it is neither here nor there since the future remains unknown (except for death and taxes - the two constants just about every human can expect).
