Sorry, but that isn't mechanical power at all. What you are saying is that organic beings are analogous to machines but to say they are actually machines themselves contradicts both academic definitions as well as "dictionary definitions."

I do agree that they are analogous but they aren't the same at all.

I'm guessing you have never studied physics in your entire life, even elementary physics. Your brain sends an electrical impulse to where an action is to be performed; the electrical energy is converted into chemical energy, which is the muscle activating, and then this chemical energy is converted into mechanical energy to perform an action.

You are a machine, just one  that will die. I think life exists in cycles of organic and non-organic. Organics wish to be everlasting and thus non-organic, and non-organics vice versa, creating an endless cycle until organic and non-organic life merge into one, or they all come to exist as pure energy. Either way, you are indeed incorrect. Just accept the fact that you are a machine. It's not perfect. It's not what you wanted. But it's the best any of us can do.

I like the Tali posts on here... *reads the giant quote walls*... I don't think that humans being or not being machines has alot to do with a beautiful and shy Quarian...

XFD The energy the human body is powered by biological and chemical energy. You're trying to pigeonhole a philosophical interpretation of "machine" and "energy" into the definition of what a machine is - it doesn't fit, though.

Not sure what word you're using there but I can't find anything that supports that:

Princeton defines "machine" as such:

S: (n) machine (any mechanical or electrical
device that transmits or modifies energy to perform or assist in the
performance of human tasks)

http://wordnetweb.pr...webwn?s=machine

machine was the word - sources cited. If you cant find its cuase your not looking.

Also in -ahem- "acadamia" The word organic means

Relating to chemical compounds containing carbon, especially hydrocarbons.

And yes as a biologist I can firmly say that the human body is considered an orgainc (read above) machine.

Ehh I don't know, humans don't qualify as machines at all. A machine is something mechanical, that uses mechanical energy to power itself.

But lots of machines use different forms of potential energy to power themselves.  Lots of machines power themselves with gasoline; potential energy stored in the bonds of molecules, just exactly the same way that humans use adenosine triphosphate as chemical potential for cell processes.

Bones can be talked about as a mechanical system of levers and hines, and muscles as a way to apply torque to those levers.  The human body is "mechanical" in many ways.

What you're talking about is that the human body is analogous.

No, it is the same.  ATP IS stored chemical potential.  Your arm IS a lever.
There are no two ways about it, it is simply true.

But BY DEFINITION nothing organic is a machine.

No, that's wrong.  No definition says this, not any that I've heard and not any that are in the dictionary.

By definition. Machines are complex pieces of equipment created to assist us. They are TOOLS.

Your definition is incorrect.  Machines do not have to be complex, and they do not have to be created by us.  A lever is a simple machine.  Even a simple inclined plane (wedge) is considered a machine.

XFD. You are seriously trying to tell me that the "academic definition" of organic is coming from a dictionary?

Dictionaries are written by lexicographers, not scientists. You're going to have to go find some real research if you want to get definitions from the disciplines.

all this nonsense right now, I don't think I'll be coming back here again, at least not for a long while.

This is really getting ridiculous. The sole purpose of this thread is to support and discuss Tali. Yes, it's all right to go slightly off topic on occasion, and yes, things are going to start to slow down as time progresses; it's not like we can keep talking about Tali for the next two years (anyone who says otherwise honestly is quite foolish). But at no time are we to start flaming each other or trolling just because we disagree! We are the civilized supporters of Tali'Zorah vas Normandy nar Rayya, and we are capable of great deeds. We are not  blood-enraged krogan! (No offense to any krogan out there.)

:alien: Our influence stopped the flaming, but before that, we held the line. Our influence stopped the trolls, but before that, we held the line! Our influence will keep Tali'Zorah in Mass Effect 3! In the battles today and for the next two years, we will hold the line! :alien:

I hope you all take to heart what has been said here, as we are Tali's only chance; it would sadden me greatly if we were her undoing.

I'm sorry, I feel I need to quote myself because even I fell to the "humans aren't machines and machines don't have emotions; EDI is evil" crap floating around. I am ashamed of my transgressions, Talimancers; please forgive me. :crying:

It evolved from a discussion about Quarians and Geth, which seems reasonably Tali-related.. no?
Certainly people could stand to trim quotes, but is it really impossible to get into a deep discussion in here?

Well neither EDI nor the Geth are machines either. Being synthetic does not make them a machine.

There are actually cut lines that, at the very least, suggest that there was going to be a Tali/femshep romance potential.

It depends where you draw the line. A machine is a device that uses energy to perform a task, As we learn more about conciousness it seems more and more the case that it's just a "bag of tricks", to quote Dan Dennet.
