Time dialation is NOT an optical illusion -- it is a real effect. Gravitational fields make time move more slowly. If you take a clock with you, an outside observer will see it slow down. For any measurable purpose, time is moving more slowly for you than it is for him.

But that doesn't mean that the imagine of the star would stay there foreever. Photons trapped on the edge of a black hole are bent into a circular orbit, and can in fact be ejected away from or into the black hole. The "image" would long have since decohered.
