It's primarily for her to stand out. Just like all the squad members have unique outfits compared to their races.

Actually Garrus is hard to tell a part from a Blue suns Turian.

Mordin can mix in well with the Salarian eclipse....

Yeah but Garrus is the only one who has a shot up piece of armor, and Mordin has that...metal thing behind his head.

Yeah but those are pretty tiny details. When you turn around a corner and see 2 turians looking right at you, the natural reaction is to pump hot lead into the bodies. Garrus might have another scar but I can't afford the delay in action on insanity.
