It wasn't just trying to make a more troubled romance. They also wanted justification for them not joining with you against the collectors. Why - so they could survive to ME3, where they will have larger roles. In addition, if the ME1 romances were fully fledged in ME2...that's rather lopsided. ME1 romances would get three games to them whereas ME2 romances would have 2.

No! Somebody not only stated her intention to abandontalif or liara, but threatened to do tali harm! Honor dictaced she must be killed. any blood relation to her must also be killed so thier genes cannot be passed on. we must them poison the corpse, force feed the poison meat to collectors and just for the hell of it kill her best friend!

I didn't, I just unlocked Tali/Legion early, right after Freedom's Progress.
