The most tragic thing about Tali is her dextro chirality; she'll never get to enjoy cheddar cheez-its.

For sure!

I've thought a lot about that, actually -- food is kind of a major deal in most cultures.  A lot of family and community events revolve around food, and going out somewhere to eat is a common activity just in terms of spending time with friends and such.  I imagine that most restaurants in ME have food for both types of DNA, but not being able to share is kind of a bummer.

That said, in actual biology chirality is not as big an issue as they make it out to be.  There are a lot of foods that we consume that contain proteins of opposite chirality; something is not poisonous simply because it contains the "wrong" type of protein.  However, two proteins of opposite chirality DO taste different even if they are otherwise the same compound.  So, even if they could eat our food and us theirs, they would taste differently to us.

Just want to emphasis this.

People need to be educated. I'm tired of having to teach people these concepts all over again.

Sorry, physics major here. What exactly would happen, then, if a human or salarian were to eat a quarian's or turian's food, and vice versa? Would it cause digestive problems or even death as ME1 says, or would there be no ill effects?

Oh...

I mis-learned (from a Trek novel) that the taste was identical but it didn't otherwise digest (so... food with NO CALORIES!!!).

Should have guessed it doesn't really work that way...

If Tali were real and dextro-protein based, you probably could.  It just wouldn't taste like pizza to her ;)
Or rather, it wouldn't taste to her like it tastes to you.  Although even if it were a dextro-pizza she probably has different taste receptors.  Which means...

.. aw screw it.

As an alien she will probably have different taste buds I get it. Still, it would be nice if they could sample each others favorate food even though I know its impossible.

Tali's gotta be my favorite romantic interest in the game. Still, I've never found her to be useful in combat really... I just love her character. She's innocent, and I love her little accent.

I don't know a lot about chem, just from my own low level chem classes, my biologist friends, and some of my own reading just out of curiosity.

Anyway, my understanding is that in most cases there would be no ill effects.  The compounds taste different because they interact with our taste receptors differently, but our digestive system would probably not have the necessary enzymes to break such proteins down; thus it would just pass right on through for the most part, without offering much in the way of nutrition.

I'm certain that there are exceptions; some foods could be useful for nutrition, and some might even be poisonous, but it would be on an ingredient-by-ingredient basis.  This seems to be a fairly complex topic, and would depend on the specfic nature of the interactions between our enzymes and the compounds in their foods.

I'll freely admit that Tali doesn't do a lot of outright killing, but she's invaluable at keeping bad guys off my back with that drone.

I'm thinking of modding the .ini to give her the claymore XD
But you're right, that drone helps a LOT, especially with swarming enemies like husks.

The most dangerous part about bringing Tali along on missions (which I always do, no matter what mission) is the fact that I go out of my way to make sure she doesn't get hurt. Instead of shooting stuff or whatever, I'll be looking around for a good, safe place for her to have cover.

I think your class plays an important role in determining what characters you will use more often. As a Vanguard, I find her drone to be a life saver. In ME1, she was fantastic against the geth.

I finally spotted her killing stuff when she started using the M-22.  The squad AI seems to try sniping with the shotguns.

Tali does get a little frustrated at times because Shepard is a damn Kill Stealer/hourder.

Now now Tali, it only seemed fair that i can Pause in the middle of battle while you Paws.

Not true.
I play almost exclusively on Hardcore / insanity and Tali is far more usefel than many think, Drones and AI hacking as well as putting her under cover in a flanking posistion makes her downright deadly.

Yeah, I noticed that .... <_<
Shotguns were insanely awesome in ME1, I think they toned them down a little TOO much in ME2, haha.  Their range is complete crapulence.

It's not the range, it's the spread.  At any kind of distance I have trouble doing anything but clipping the enemy a little with the blast.  The tight grouping of the M-22 is very nice.

Yeah, I guess it's just down to how our body reacts to it. I suppose in some cases it might even be dangerous for a salarian to eat a human's food and a human, salarian's. Awesome, though, thanks for that. I mean I know that there are some (rare) d-form proteins on Earth and that most sugars are d-form, but I never really thought about how it affects us if we were to ingest it.

I honestly hate science though. Not because it's stupid or anything, but because there's too much of it and not enough time for me to learn all, or most, of it. But at the same time that's why I love it: because it's virtually endless and there are always new things for us to discover.

Alright, now I'm going to sleep -_-

Keelah se'lai and goodnight! ^_^

To clear something else up. Food doesn't taste differently to Dextro/Levo based organisms based on that. It tastes differently due to their tongues developing along a different lines then ours.

It's possible quarians taste buds translate chemicals 100% identical to how we do. It's just unlikely.

Ah yeah.. I didn't mean to imply that the difference in taste was due to the organism being based on particular protein chirality.  Of course, all taste sensations come from the interaction between food we eat and the receptors on our tongue and in our noses.  If those were the same in Quarians it seems like it would be a miracle, though, since their bodies would likely make use of different compounds, especially with alternate-chirality DNA / amino acids.

You know, I just had a thought...
A really cool little piece of trivial biotechnology for the ME universe could be little dissolving tabs that you put on your tongue that translate flavors, so that you could taste things as a Quarian or Turian does :)  Kinda like those "miraculin" tabs that you can buy that make everything taste sweet.  They bind to your taste and oldfactory receptors and cause compounds to interact with them differently.  Awesome! :D
