Sorry, physics major here. What exactly would happen, then, if a human or salarian were to eat a quarian's or turian's food, and vice versa? Would it cause digestive problems or even death as ME1 says, or would there be no ill effects?Lareit wrote...

The most tragic thing about Tali is her dextro chirality; she'll never get to enjoy cheddar cheez-its.
I've thought a lot about that, actually -- food is kind of a major deal in most cultures. A lot of family and community events revolve around food, and going out somewhere to eat is a common activity just in terms of spending time with friends and such. I imagine that most restaurants in ME have food for both types of DNA, but not being able to share is kind of a bummer.
That said, in actual biology chirality is not as big an issue as they make it out to be. There are a lot of foods that we consume that contain proteins of opposite chirality; something is not poisonous simply because it contains the "wrong" type of protein. However, two proteins of opposite chirality DO taste different even if they are otherwise the same compound. So, even if they could eat our food and us theirs, they would taste differently to us.
Just want to emphasis this.
People need to be educated. I'm tired of having to teach people these concepts all over again.
All Tali fans, read this! IT'S UP TO US TO KEEP TALI ALIVE! 3.0!!

I mis-learned (from a Trek novel) that the taste was identical but it didn't otherwise digest (so... food with NO CALORIES!!!).
Should have guessed it doesn't really work that way...

As an alien she will probably have different taste buds I get it. Still, it would be nice if they could sample each others favorate food even though I know its impossible.Pauravi wrote...
If Tali were real and dextro-protein based, you probably could. It just wouldn't taste like pizza to herSol243 wrote...
It's still too bad I can't share a pizza with her.
Or rather, it wouldn't taste to her like it tastes to you. Although even if it were a dextro-pizza she probably has different taste receptors. Which means...
.. aw screw it.

I don't know a lot about chem, just from my own low level chem classes, my biologist friends, and some of my own reading just out of curiosity.
Anyway, my understanding is that in most cases there would be no ill effects. The compounds taste different because they interact with our taste receptors differently, but our digestive system would probably not have the necessary enzymes to break such proteins down; thus it would just pass right on through for the most part, without offering much in the way of nutrition.
I'm certain that there are exceptions; some foods could be useful for nutrition, and some might even be poisonous, but it would be on an ingredient-by-ingredient basis. This seems to be a fairly complex topic, and would depend on the specfic nature of the interactions between our enzymes and the compounds in their foods.

I think your class plays an important role in determining what characters you will use more often. As a Vanguard, I find her drone to be a life saver. In ME1, she was fantastic against the geth.

Not true.
I play almost exclusively on Hardcore / insanity and Tali is far more usefel than many think, Drones and AI hacking as well as putting her under cover in a flanking posistion makes her downright deadly.

Shotguns were insanely awesome in ME1, I think they toned them down a little TOO much in ME2, haha. Their range is complete crapulence.

It's not the range, it's the spread. At any kind of distance I have trouble doing anything but clipping the enemy a little with the blast. The tight grouping of the M-22 is very nice.Pauravi wrote...

Yeah, I guess it's just down to how our body reacts to it. I suppose in some cases it might even be dangerous for a salarian to eat a human's food and a human, salarian's. Awesome, though, thanks for that. I mean I know that there are some (rare) d-form proteins on Earth and that most sugars are d-form, but I never really thought about how it affects us if we were to ingest it.Pauravi wrote...

I honestly hate science though. Not because it's stupid or anything, but because there's too much of it and not enough time for me to learn all, or most, of it. But at the same time that's why I love it: because it's virtually endless and there are always new things for us to discover.

To clear something else up. Food doesn't taste differently to Dextro/Levo based organisms based on that. It tastes differently due to their tongues developing along a different lines then ours.
It's possible quarians taste buds translate chemicals 100% identical to how we do. It's just unlikely.

Posté 12 mars 2010 - 07:34
Ah yeah.. I didn't mean to imply that the difference in taste was due to the organism being based on particular protein chirality. Of course, all taste sensations come from the interaction between food we eat and the receptors on our tongue and in our noses. If those were the same in Quarians it seems like it would be a miracle, though, since their bodies would likely make use of different compounds, especially with alternate-chirality DNA / amino acids.Lareit wrote...

You know, I just had a thought...
A really cool little piece of trivial biotechnology for the ME universe could be little dissolving tabs that you put on your tongue that translate flavors, so that you could taste things as a Quarian or Turian does
