I've thought about it some, my personal favorite theory is the one where the super advanced ancient race turned themselves into them.  I would guess they were in a situation like the drell, where they had expanded as far as they could, and would eventually die out.  By turning themselves into half organic, half synthetics, they could live forever. 

It explains why Harbinger says that they are salvation through destruction.  And it could explain why they purge the galaxy every 50k years as well (to keep others from reaching their fate.) 

I think that's more likely than the quarian/geth situation, but who knows.

Yeah it was nuts man, except Shepard rammed the SR2 into harbinger before he destroyed the citadel (all the other reapers where defeated and Alliance ships where coming to reinforce, but where out of time). He basically did around the same thing, put Tali on an escape pod against her will, she wanted to be with him to the end. Never had a dream with such screams of emotional pain, was scary. 

But he was able to plot a course to ram Harbinger, and copied EDI to an OSD and got the hell out of there.

Then I woke up after that badass dream and made me some badass pancakes.

I would seriously pay money to have a dream that awesome, I hate you, lol

Oh, I didn't even go into the specifics of that dream, if I did, it'd easily be 2000k words. Sometimes I dream of nothing, and other times I have highly real like and detailed dreams. Like the ones you can't tell if it's really a dream or not.

While you can't pay for the dreams.. you can pay for Spat's original homemade 'BadAss' pancakes! :happy:

I'm going to assume that the pre-Reapers turned themselves into a Reaper.  So it wasn't too idiotic from their perspective.

The "killing machine got out of control" backstory was already done by Saberhagen.

Well, someone created them and then they get out of control, like the Geth but not exactly the same way.

Dunno, I don't think they're out of control.  What they do is too bizarre:  wipe out all intelligent life, but elevate "worthy" races to their own stature?  I think they're doing exactly what they intended.

Think about it:  the pre-Reapers find themselves alone in a young universe, see their chance at immortality, and take it, becoming an immortal hive-mind of individual AIs.  Over the years they watch new races grow, and begin to fear that their immortality is an illusion.  They take measures to insure the races will develop in a way they can control, and in such a way that they can prune them back when the times comes.

But they are still alone.  So they decide to share, to bring others they consider worthy to their exalted heights.  Unfortunately, the method of this immortality is the horrific death of the entire race.  Consequently, new Reapers are invariably as mad and twisted as the original.

I think that's more likely than the quarian/geth situation, but who knows.

That's a great idea and it would explain a lot of things. And on the Horizon he also says "Prepare these human beings for exaltation" or something like that.

Well, do you remember what Sovereign said that we can't understand them. From our point it may looks like they are mad and twisted but from their point it may doesn't because they think differently.
What I want to say is that we can't understand their logic until we are one of them.
