I think it's a humorous reference to the space stage of spore. Where you would fly your ship to a planet, and occasionally a giant monster would be on it, you'd often have to kill it or run away as it shoots fireballs at you. It's all mostly references, and i'm too tired to list every single reference. Darwin is likely there because the early parts of the game involve evolution, evolving from a cell, to a creature, to a tribe, to a civilization, and enventually to a space-faring species.
