Bah. People are FAR too harsh on Ashley and Liara. I get tired of arguing these points, they crop of so often, but frankly I think people are far too selfish if they expect them to just drop all their sh*t and hop on board with you all of a sudden. I don't know, maybe people lack empathy, or the ability to see things from another's perspective, or maybe they just lack the commitment to stick with a relationship when it is in trouble and you have other options, but they both have good reasons for acting the way they do.
Ashley is an Alliance marine, and she is as gung-ho patriotic as any U.S. marine. You knew that from the beginning and it is what you expect. For her, finding out that you work for Cerberus would be like you finding out that your best friend joined the Taliban or the Neo-****s. Yes, her reaction is not rational, but also realistic given her personality and background. I'd expect her to be torn, and she is.
Liara I especially don't understand. People are acting as if she abandoned you when she is the only reason you're even alive! She is clearly suffering emotionally and psychologically from what she had to go through to get you back, and now all of a sudden she is just supposed to be cured of her obsession after two years of stewing hatred because you pop in the door and say, "Hey time to drop everything, lets go"? You expect her to be dedicated to you and she was -- she saved your life. How how about showing a little dedication to her?
Bioware is testing people's commitment to their original LI's by making a "troubled romance" plot, and frankly I think they did a good job coming up with reasons for it. Sure, they could have fleshed the dialogue out more, explained their motivations better, but how they act DOES make sense. People sure aren't very understanding.
