While I share your distress in regards to finding overweight women attractive, historically (and even today,) in some societies it was (is) considered a sign of wealth since the person can clearly afford food. This perceived ability to feed oneself, and thus presumably a family, has led to a certain value being placed on pairing one individual with an overweight one in many African societies (and possibly elsewhere too).

Hmmm, I had always thought that instinctual attraction to overweight people was from women regarding men... Women(Not culturally of course) aren't really the hunters/providers for our species... And of course,t here's a big difference between having some weight from being well fed, and being unhealthily overweight.
