Conversely a lot of countries are tightly knit in to American power - both economically and militarily. It may be more expedient for them to see Canada sacrificed to keep the peace and order on the larger global scene.

True that KFD but the key issue here is oil........I'm not saying really any nation would intervene for Canada's sake but they might because US power would dramatically increase if they got direct access to our oil and natural gas fields.....and Russia would be d*mned if they at least didn't make clear how much that would shift the balance of power and how unacceptable to them that would be......

In my opinion I think you are overestimating the value of Canadian oil from Russia's perspective. Without looking at the actual figures I suspect the majority of oil and natural gas sales that Russia makes go to Europe. It's the easiest, cheapest, and most stable area to supply with a group of nations able to pay given Russia's neighbouring countries (note: I haven't forgotten about Alaska, but it has its own oil supplies and there's the Bering Sea to consider). US securing Canada's oil reserves would be unlikely to change that since the US would likely seize the Shale Tar Pits' oil reserves for its own consumption and not export.

Russia accounted for ca. 1.2 to 2.0% of total global oil output back in 2004 or so, IIRC. It makes Russia a good amount of money but it does not make Russia a leading player on the global oil scene compared to some other oil exporting countries. Russia might very well take steps to try and arm itself more heavily, faster and condemn a US military action against Canada but I expect that's all it would amount to. Same with the world-at-large. There might be a few half-hearted attempts at trade sanctions.
