Many people tend to compare the biology of the alien races in Mass Effect to those of humans. One detail the forget though is the fact that they are aliens. Biology that works for creatures of Earth may not necesarrily work for creatures of entirely different worlds. Body chemistry is an entirely different factor however, since proteins assumingly work the same reagrdless of build.

You're not looking hard enough.

But the idea is plausible, since you can't change the functionality of base-materials such as proteins, they still act the same regardless. Take minerals for an example, iron extracted from the ore of a meteor is still exactly the same as iron naturally found on earth. You can not change things that are so basic, so proteins should be in the same boat.
