On an un-related topic, and at the risk of sounding like a newb: How the hell do I get pictures in my posts?

code [ i m g ]  [/ i m g ] no spaces

OK, and how would I get the code if I was to have several pictures laying around in a word doc?

that is the code you just put the image url in between that

I meant the url of the images, I don't think I can get the url of an image I only have saved in a word doc

IDK if you have a photobucket you can upload it to there and it'll give you the code automatically

BTW I'm going to sleep keelah Se'lai

If that would be enough, there wouldn't be over 100,000 postings about Tali. =]

its never been this bad before, to my knowledge, but yeah, mornings are slow.

i guess the tali love is finally simmering down. i'm sure we all love her just as much, just runnin gout of every tiny detail to discuss. soon the posts will probably boil back down to "tali is awesome." "yes she is." "i agree." wash, rinse, repeat.

This week has seen some pretty active evenings and nights. I don't think that it slows down already.

Environment IS part of natural selection Image IPB

Not necessarily, and especially not with factors such as skin tone.

Not true, environment includes vegitation, climate, different seasons, and direct sunlight. Which all effect skin tone (I think)

That it does, but the traits(skintone) you pass down to your offspring is not a form of natural selection per se... White people have live in tropical areas and remind that white despite the environmental factors, what skin tone you are is based primarily on genetic factors, not environmental.. And as such can not be considered completely a form of natural selection, though I'm sure it does play some part, just not a majority.

This is true, hadn't thought of that... Honestly I'm rather under-educated on this topic so you'll have to excuse me if I have no idea what "m talking aboutImage IPB

I know this was a while
back, but I have to chime in on this because Jake is, frankly, misleading people.

First of all, genetic factors are selected for BY the environment.  That is exactly how evolution through natural selection works, you cannot separate environmental and genetic factos; they are not separate things.  When animals live within a certain environment over many generations, the environment provides the pressure that selects the most suitably adapted offspring.  In time, that population will look different because of their adaptations, and that will be reflected in their genes.

In your case of skin tone, it is equally true.  While a white person who goes to the tropics will not all of a sudden turn dark-skinned, this doesn't mean that environment isn't a factor in skin color.  In the case of skin color, there are two primary factors: sun protection and vitamin D.  People with high melanin levels are more protected from the sun's UV, but that same protection also blocks light that we need to manufacture vitamin D.  In high-sun environments this isn't a problem, but in low-sun environments it can cause vitamin D deficiency, which provides the selective pressure to weed out dark skin in populations at higher latitudes.  It isn't an accident that populations that historically lived closer to the equator have darker skin, and light-skinned populations historically lived away from it.  Today, however, vitamin D is not quite so much of an issue due to things like vitamin supplements and fortified milk, so the selective pressure is not great.

This idea of selective pressure is a very important one.  In order to analyze why a change happens, or IF it will happen, you need to look at the things that are influencing survival.  A long time ago, before sunscreen and vitamins and cancer treatment, skin tone was absolutely something that would have influenced the ability to survive and reproduce.  It is a genetic change that was caused by environmental factors.  Today, however, skin tone is not so important for survival, and thus there is little pressure to select for it.  But saying that it isn't an example of natural selection just because your kids won't be black because you movied to the tropics.. that is just a tragic misunderstanding of the workings of natural selection.

Lesson over.

its not that part its the evolution part never did makes sense to me why doesn't a boy who swims everyday not grow gills if that the case

Because evolution doesn't select your genes, it selects your parents genes.
Your parents didn't need gills to survive, have kids, and pass their genes on to you, so you don't have gills.  You won't need gills to reproduce either, even if you swim every day.  There is no selective pressure for you to grow them.

but out of all thing scientist say this is the one the makes the least bit of sense they say everything needs evidence yet they base most of their proof off of theories just doesn't make any sense to me ...meh :-/

I'd like to point out that a scientific theory is a very well-proven thing.  Quantum mechanics is "just a theory", and it has been responsible for creating computer parts, TVs, radios, microwaves, and practically everything else we use on a daily basis.

In science nothing is ever proven 100% -- we always assume that something can be shown to be wrong, that's why they're theories and not truths.  However, when someone comes up with an idea, and a LOT of experimental evidence backs it up, it is called a theory.  Until then it is just a hypothesis or conjecture.  Proof is not based on theories, proof MAKES theories.

Well, it was St Patrick's Day and the temperatures outside a rising, so maybe most don't want to spend their evenings in a forum thread but rather in a Biergarten. =]

Goodness knows WHY... all she ever did was tell them to go away and die in a fire.
Ramming your head into a brick wall would be about as fruitful :P
