Yes, I know exactly what you mean.

Mine are all Soldier, all called John Shepard. Sometimes it can get confusing.

Yeah, I know that problem, specially with ME1, where most playthroughs are about two years old by now. 

That's why I played it through again shortly before ME2 was released.

You can "choose" if you safe her or if she safes you later by selecting her as the first or the second groupmember. 
Sadly you can't have both.
