Hm. Interesting topic. While I have a vested interest in seeing a liberal democratic Western power like the US remain a superpower, I also think there are sound philosophical arguments that can be made as to why it is preferable - at least in terms of ideological theory - to that of an authoritarian state like China. Then again, being a Westerner myself, I'm likely somewhat biased yet nonetheless.

The US needs to clean up its finances. Quickly. No great power that can not finance itself remains a great power for long. Take for example the British Empire: Some 70-80 years ago it had a population of some 400 million and Britain was the richest nation on Earth before WWI. It was a banking nation yet once its finances collapsed so too did its empire (amongst other reasons). The Soviet Union is another classic example of this notion.

or like... 234 years ago when the british had some colonies they wanted to take money from.

We all know what happened to Rome.

They kicked ass for over 400 years and then only half the empire fell the eastern part kicked ass for another 1000 years and died like a badass, all in all not a bad way to go.
