There will probably be 4 packs with 3 characters each.

Just think of it as supporting Bioware.  I play on PC and honestly, if I *really* didn't want to pay for it, I could find a way around it.  But $2 is not exactly a bank-breaker, even as a poor student.  I just treat it as a sort of a thank you note for giving me Zaeed, and the Normandy Site, and the Cerberus shotgun/armor, and the upcoming Hammerhead all for free.

I'm with you up to a certain point. That "free" DLC isn't a gift to you, but a strategy that EA is employing with many of its new titles to suplement sales down the line, as retail sales drop off and the game is more frequently lent or purchased used. I think it's a good idea, and a great way to add value to the game over time. If we're to get these cosmetic packs, I'll likely buy em to mix things up on a subsequent playthrough. That said, being annoyed with Bioware for bringing them out is sort of silly. What about those picture packs? Or the avatar clothes?

Personally, I'm glad that they can look to all these other sources of revenue in order to bring more money into the Mass Effect project, as well as the studio. Don't get me wrong, I agree that the publisher is going to get them to squeeze out the money where they can, and I don't doubt for a SECOND that it's happening on some level already.
(Sorry for the offtopic tangent, but better that than the pissing contest I'm ignoring to respond to this. )

The Next running theme will be plaid jackets. Everyone will love everything about it but the jacket.
