I think for the most part its hype backlash.  For anything, anywhere, if a lot of people like it, people will hate it for the simple reason that others like it.  You name something that's popular, and there will be legions of people that hate it.  It's a stupid, childish reaction, but it is constant no matter what the item in question is.

There is also a real us against them mentality among fans of other characters.  Moreso with the specific love interests.  A lot of people seem to think that if they like Miranda, anyone who likes Tali is their enemy.  I see it here plenty as well, so that's not necessarily specific to one character.  Again, childish reaction, but people in general tend to lack maturity.

Another possibility is that people see a few fans that are more obsessive, and make a generalization of the rest of the fan base as such.  Again, not wise, but that's why you can't be concerned with what other's think.
