I'm pretty sure his life doesn't completely hinge on your words.  I've heard of people having him live after going with the renegade option, and people having him die after doing the paragon interupt.  While I haven't seen it confirmed anywhere, I'm almost certain you don't need the paragon interupt to save him.

I always do the paragon interruption, and once took like and hour with the Colossus and he survived.
