I'd say most likely your speakers then, I had the opposite problem, my speakers we're stuttering trying to produce background sounds, so dialogues were crystal.

Posting again, because it was surely overlooked. Could use small help...

if you can hear them a lil, then it's a problem with your speakers most likely.. If you're talking about the couple times(Samara's loyalty mission) where it cuts out completely, that's a bug.

I don't recall encountering such a bug at that stage nor anywhere else in the game. Mayhaps I got a "good" copy of ME2?

Right, the game renders the sound as dialogue coming from in front of you, and battle shouts as coming from behind. My speakers are starting to go, so in my case sounds from behind(Battle cries) are hard to make out; but sounds from in front(dialogue) comes out fine...
