Preview of next chap of my long fanfic:
The hover car landed on the tundra of the frozen planet with all the grace of a falling boulder. Stepping out of the contraption, Marrek, followed by Jacob and Miranda, surveyed his surroundings. The colony as obviously abandoned, but otherwise looked normal as the night snow fell on the compartments that made up the housing. “Remember, shoot anything that moves.” Marrek called out to his squad as they both nodded and pulled out their weapons. Shepard was holding a Geth pulse rifle, a deadly sniper rifle with a higher rate of fire than most of its class. Looking around, the cyborg focused his vision and saw that only on of the doors of the commune was unlocked. ’Might as well go that way.’
Signaling to his teammates, they made their way through the area. As they entered the house, it looked as if there was no struggle whatsoever. “Odd…no signs of a fight, nothing. It’s as if they all just up and left in the middle of dinner.” Said Marrek.
“It’s a literal ghost town. This does not bode well.” Jacob stated as his brown eyes narrowed.
Through more houses they went, finding a few hackable PDAs and wall safes full of credits. When they got to the end, they heard a noise in front of them and to their left. Immediately, two FENRIS-class mechs jumped out in front while two LOKI mechs fired from their side. “****! Taylor, Miranda, take out those guard dogs! I’ll take out the LOKIs!”
Nodding, Jacob fired off a few rounds from his M-3 Heavy Pistol while Miranda used a Warp to shred a mech to pieces. Marrek turned towards their left flank and aimed his pulse rifle at his enemy’s head before bulling the trigger with his finger and letting loose a white-hot sniper slug into its’ central processor, blowing it up and sending the other robot to the ground. Deciding to finish its partner off, Shepard used his biotics, combined with his cybernetic augments, to launch himself up into the air and land on top of the mech, crushing it in the process. “Something is wrong here. These mechs should have recognized us as friendlies.” Said Jacob as he scanned a mech with his omni-tool.
“Let’s get gong and find out who the hell programmed these mechs to shoot at the first sign of movement.” Ordered Marrek as he rushed up the steps.
The group dashed through the empty housing area, making quick work of the mechs that lurked about until they came upon a door and heard muffled voices beyond it. Signaling to his team, Marrek opened the door and held his sniper rifle high in he air, a male quarian in its scope range. Said male quarian lifted his own shotgun. “Cerberus, stay the hell away or I’ll blow your head-”
“That’s enough Prazza! Stand down!” Came a voice that was oddly familiar to the Commander.
‘It can’t be…the galaxy isn’t that small, is it?’ He thought as he turned his helmeted head to the female quarian.
“T-Tali?”
The female quarian almost jumped with surprise the Cerberus Squad leader addressed her by her first name so casually. ‘That voice…but it can’t be, they said he was…dead!’
Despite her doubts, she had to speak up. “Ma-Marrek, is…is that you?”
“Remember that geth data I gave to you in the Armstrong Nebula, did it help you in your pilgrimage?” Replied Shepard with his own question.
His answer from Tali was a running hug that almost knocked the wind out of him. “I-I can’t believe it’s you. Oh, Marrek…”
The man sighed and wrapped his arms around the woman’s small waist and inhaled her scent. ‘Hmm, engine oil, metal and…lavender? I like it.’
Tali, meanwhile sniffled as tears ran down her cheeks. The man who had saved her AND the galaxy, the man she had fallen in love with, was alive. Their moment was interrupted when Miranda gave a small ‘ahem’, making the two spring backwards. Tali was the first to speak. “Shepard, why are you here and why are you working with…Cerberus? You know what they are capable of!”
The hybrid-soldier sighed. “They rebuilt me, made me better, resurrected me. When the Alliance and the Council abandoned me, they kept on looking. I owe them.”
It was then that Tali noticed Shepard’s right arm. It was prosthetic. “Keelah, Marrek! Your arm! It’s…
“A geth arm, I know. You don’t get your arm cut off in space then reattach it. Just leave it at that.”
Miranda took this time to speak up. “What are quarians doing on a human colony?” The Australian asked.
Sensing the disgust in her voice, Tali’Zorah Vas Neema returned fire with her own cold voice. One of our own, Veetor, was here at Freedom’s progress for his pilgrimage, he never liked crowds and preferred small groups.”
