Keeping your units alive is more important then tank spam or zerging. Especially if your units grow in strength and carry over into the next mission. This the case? I had CC1-3 but wasn't sure if I wanted this last installment.
CoH isn't always like that. Unit preservation is key but by the end of a battle casualty rates clock in at somewhere around 80%

Most people take the heavy defenders on the final part of the suicide mission and/or let someone who isn't loyal hold the line. If the holders don't pass a Defense Check, the game kills off the characters with lowest defense. Mordin is the squishiest member of the team.

He'll live if you have a loyal Garrus, Grunt, Jacob, and Miranda on your team and they hold the line.
