It just seems too idealistic to me. People in general are confrontational. The more people you have together, the more likely you are to have clashing personalities, or just jerks in general that are looking to cause problems. Those people aren't common in every day life, but they do exist, and anonymity of the internet only makes it worse.
The simple truth is that we are a community, and a rather large and strong one at that. Where in the world can you find a place without crime? It won't happen, the same way you won't get thousands of fans on an internet board to act as one. Even the most tightknit group is susceptible to one bad apple.
As I said before, most people are just fine with all of the characters. I dislike Miranda, but I don't hate her fans or cause trouble on her thread, same as many here. Some do though, and there is really nothing that can be done about it.
If you want to stress over the 1% of the community that you can't save, then that's your perogative, but it just won't happen. Human nature just isn't perfect, its that simple.
That's why I find this tragic. We are simply to insular to make nice to others, there are some who encourage this, but quite a few antagonize those who do. When there is a confrontation, it becomes a big spectacle to others, opposing parties, often in the same general fandom, fighting about some subjective issue is just so petty and ridiculous, and they call it "flamewars". I hate that.
I
want people to change, I want everyone to just get along. I only recently joined this forum, beforehand, I had never read the ME forums, I was always under the assumption that they all bonded together, now I see how naive I was. During the release of Mass Effect 2, I was very excited, what really made me happy was that Garrus and Tali would be recruitable, accoringly most people were happy with that, too. I am aware that most people
do like these characters, but those who vocally oppose are what sicken me. So few of them, yet so strong is their visible hate. It leaves a bad impression.
That's why I find this all tragic.
