I concede this one to you. Having multiple smaller fingers is better than having fewer larger ones. There are probably some advantages to having only three fingers, but I can't think of any.
On a sidenote, I love this thread. I can't imagine having this discussion anywhere else.
Chameleons have two "fingers." Actually one set of two fingers fused and another set of three fingres fused. However, gave chameleon's advantage of grip on branches. Perhaps something similar at work? Also note many species in Mass Effect have three fingers.
Thane for instance, has 5 fingers on either hand, but the middle and ring fingers are fused.
