If things had gone wrong, what would be your recommendation for Shepard's suicide?  I was thinking of swallowing three incindiary grenades, but a few pistol rounds to the gut also has it's allure. 

Why does it have to be either or?  Both of those together sound good, just add plummeting from a very high object to the equation and I think that's a solid punishment

I tend to just ignore the 2nd part of the firefight all together.
My Shepard pretty much runs full sprint back through Cora's Den elbowing mercs in the face and screaming at them to get out of his way.

He has an awesome, awesome Quarian to save.

I tried that too...got gunned down in seconds. 

I think maybe he could cover himself in napalm, shoot himself in both kneecaps, swallow the grenades, then  dive off a tall building.

Is that a sufficiently punishing death?

I'd say a soldier or infiltraitor

when you play Gears of War style that combat drone is really useful
