See, I've yet to have that problem and every time I send Grunt back to the ship and my groups have been:

Tali x Garrus
Tali x Zaeed
Tali x Thane

I've never lost anyone 'holding the line'.

I don't claim to know everything about the suicide mission, but you're certainly playing with fire

I sent Grunt back as escort my first playthrough, took Tali and Thane to the end. Nobody died. I'm a completionist though I watched my little brother fail miserably...was hilarious to watch actually especially since Tali didn't die

I'd be flattered.

I'm not sure that I would be flattered, but I wouldn't make a huge deal about it.  As long as the people in question aren't trying to pass it off as real, its probably better to not try and fight the internet

"Forgot" to get the ship armour too

Would it be because when the geth are breaking down the down rather then picking "Someone needs to hold the door" (or something close to that) I pick the other option, the "We need to move quickly" or . . .something. . .

As far as I know, that makes no difference. I always pick "hold the door", and send Garrus back. Two heavy defenders (in my case Grunt and Zaeed) are enough to keep Mordin alive.
