It's just the way the various species aren't quite in touch with each other's culture. Or are, a little too much. It's all in fun, anyway. We do the same thing to Garrus all the time.

BTW: I am doing my first MShep run, and I want you all to know, I am romancing Liara in ME1 and then, yes, Tali for ME2.
