Our class made 3 french teachers in a row get depression, one had cancer wich returned because of the stress.
Thats not a good thing. Giving someone cancer is not a good thing. Giving a french teacher depression 3 times isnt a good thing.

I'm not sure the whole thing can be blamed on lack of initiative. They have to have tons of down time on the Normandy. And I talked to Tali dozens of times when she had nothing new to say. And Shepard doesn't come across as someone who lacks initiative for anything he wants.
Not telling her has to be rooted in either being scared of rejection (unlikely for Shepard,) or not thinking there is a chance for a relationship (more likely.)

I think its a great example of something great coming out of something bad. If Tali was an LI in the first game, there's no way the romance would have held the same weight as it does now. This is assuming they even made her a squad mate in the first place. Going back, we should all celebrate Tali not being an LI in ME1. That kind of shallow three conversations and sex thing doesn't really fit her. I wouldn't have minded being able to at least open the door a little though. Drop some hint or something
I would like to get a little window into Shepard's feelings from the time though. Tali was always extremely hot, and she had a good personality in ME1. There's really no excuse for his obliviousness <_<

I think she would have been happy to start the relationship then. I don't think she would be as quick to find a way to have sex as she is in ME2 because the relationship isn't as deep. I think it would probably be a lot more of an immature relationship altogether.
I think it could have meshed with the story if they started off with like a first date phase, then Shep gets spaced, and everything resets to ME2 levels. Just replace finding out if Shep is the same person with whether he likes her or not.
I still prefer the way it is now, but there were ways to have Tali be an LI in ME1 without screwing everything up.

This seems like the most likely thing that would have gone through Shepard's mind. She's an entirely different species, has a nonexistant immune system and is the daughter of an Admiral! How could he even stand a chance?
