As much as we love happy endings, you have to admit that sad or tragic ones really stick in our minds more. Now, that doesn't mean they ALWAYS make for better ends, it's nice to have a 'happly ever after', but sometimes beauty comes out of tragedy.
I mean, would Titanic have been as good if Leonardo had pulled his pretty, pretty self out of the water and onto the floating door? Probably not. Thus we have: "Never let go."
"Hey, thanks for not letting go" doesn't really have the same punch. 
I agree and approve to a certain extent. If Jack Dawson had gotten tortured and burned alive while screaming, it would not have the same epicness (except would burn in your memories forever).
Not saying you'd write anything like that
