Concerning fan work, I tend to keep my mouth shut unless the poster says they want critique. I find it's too easy for people to otherwise be overly defensive or not even acknowledge your post if you attempt to critique them.

The problem is that some people ask for critique, and then are not pleased with the results.

Agreed on both counts, I dont leave critique usually unless they ask it. However you can all feel free to critique my work, just please dont leave comments like "God your writing sucks"

Long as its constructive I appreciate it all ^_^

If I thought your writing sucks, we probably wouldn't be having this conversation.  I'd keep my mouth shut.  Just sayin'.

*snip*

I have to ask.  I've read a lot, and have strong opinions on what I like and dont like or what works and doesn't work.  Some people don't really want criticism, and maybe I'm not the best at giving it in a constructive manner.

I know how it feels to have something I wrote and cared about get deconstructed in a brutal fashion.  Heck, I do it to myself all the time, that's why I write so slowly.  So I don't want to up in someone's business unless they really want it.

I'm very much the same.  I am a vicious editor, and I fnd it hard to turn that part of my brain off.  I used to feel guilty in college writing classes where peer review was required, because I'd often get a paper back from a classmate with "It was great!!! No suggestions!!!" on the last page, and the poor bastard's paper was top-to-bottom ink, courtesy me

Been there.  I try to divide stuff I read into two categories:  the people I could never help, and the people I could.  The people I can't help (since this is just the internet, after all) get off-hand comments.  If they're having fun, good for them.

When I see someone who's clearly got the basics, but just isn't taking the time or whatever to be great, that's when I try to actually offer something.

That seems wise.  However, the obsessive-compulsive in me (that wants to fix everything) finds it hard to differentiate sometimes, especially in an academic scenario where there are people with varying levels of aptitude.

Example: I went back to college as a belated transfer student after some years of gainful employment, and I filled holes in my academic transcript with writing courses.  I never stopped reading or writing in my time away from academia, so I had what amounted to an unfair advantage (not in ability, I have to stress, I'm not trying to be arrogant, just in experience and perspective) as compared to the students right out of high school.  It was hard to differentiate between the kids who were trying hard but just didn't have the knack and the kids who just wrote something halfassed when they woke up the afternoon before class.  It was easily the most stressful part of going back to school.

So this reached 605 pages on the virtue of off-topic insanity?

Somebody needs to ASSUME DIRECT CONTROL and do some house cleaning here.

Anyway, Tali was a major character in ME1 and ME2, so why not ME3?

Well the thread isnt about Tali just being a major character,

It is about the fear that Tali the new LI will be reduced to NPC status like Liara/Ash/Kaiden/Wrex were from ME1

As long as they make her a squaddie and LI in ME3 we will be happy ^_^

When I was in school, one of the writing classes I was in got "volunteered" by the TA to help mentor English students from the local "got expelled eslewhere so have to go here" high school.  I got to see a lot of really earnest, but completely inept writing, much of it poetry.  I'm not a poetry guy anyway, so that was where I started learning to just roll with the people having fun and concentrate on the people who could get better.

Triage, I guess, but I can't teach sentence structure or whatever to someone who doesn't already know it.  I can, however, try to get someone to think about how they can make their work better.  Most people just don't ask (or know how to ask) themselves enough questions about what they're writing.

That's not even counting the 1500 posts from the first two threads.  A lot of the time it's just people with a shared interest joking around.

However, I'm not even remotely worried about Tali not having a big role in ME3.  The writers clearly love her, the fans are crazy about her, and there are lots of Tali-related loose ends to tie up.  That said, we have fun in here, and Tali is still the topic of most posts.

I also follow the mentalty that you spoke of earlier of being more apt to giving critiques to people who have a good foundation than people who just don't. Wonder why that is.

The topic is keeping Tali focused interest alive and well to advertise to Bioware an interest in the character.

The actually posts and thread are basically a commune for Tali fans to socialize. I serves the purpose of the topic.

They need to make her a squadmate and LI in ME3, AND not write her off in the story, like get her killed (without Shepard having the choice to save her, of course) or change her character drastically like Liara.  Those are the things I would be most pissed to see happen at least.

And on that note I am going to go to bed as well.

If ya get bored feel free to read Ch 16: Lia'Vael in my fan fic and leave yer honest opinions guys ^_^

The thread hasn't been totally off topic thou Antilles333, a few arguments here and there about apropriateness or the length of quotes, or quoting a picture a dozen times a page stress us out yes. Overall thou we have stuck to the message of Tali in ME3 for the bulk of that 2100 pages I would say.

Love ya all and no hard feelings anyone. Keelah se'lai
