I share your sentiments and yet many Europeans are aghast at the thought of having gun laws like the ones in the US. I do favour strict gun laws, but I do wish there was more leeway for a civilian to gain a permit for one. It should amount to more than a 3 day background check period though, IMO. Perhaps it should even include a professional psychological profiling session.

The right to defend your self, in my eyes, is one of the ultimate freedoms and RIGHTS of a human being. Do gun crimes happen in the US? Yes they do, but most of them are criminals who don't go to the ma&pop gun store and do a federal background check. They by them off the streets out of a car trunk/boot. Not the person who follows the law, buys the gun leagaly. ( I know you weren't implying anything about gun crime, I'm just rambling lol)

But I can sleep in peace at night, for I have the peace maker in hands reach.

Not so in our country. Don't even get me started on the way cops and courts work here 
I'd be more likely incarcerated for hurting the guy excersising his right to break into my home at night.
