All races in the galaxy use the same operational interface? And that interface is on 300 year old ships? Something isn't right here.... :?

"Computers: Haptic Adaptive Interface

Advances in computing have done away with traditional input devices like keyboards. Instead, modern input peripherals are usually holographically displayed in front of the user at a height and angle for ergonomic ease. Machines that use this interface detect a user through a microframe chip in the user's glove that "keys in" to the computer. Once a user is accepted, motion accelerometers in the user's gloves match his hands' location with that of a proportionate but smaller "mirror" set of controls inside the computer itself. As the user presses against the holographic field, force-feedback in the glove kicks in, giving a slight resistance. A person can feel his way though using a touch-screen that isn't actually there. A simple toggle switch on the back of the hands allows the glove to be turned off when not in use.

Haptic interfaces have become so common that some individuals undergo cybernetic enhancement surgery to have the accelerometers implanted in their fingertips. "Going bareskin" is the sign of a committed computer user who no longer has to fuss with putting on gloves or cleaning them with alcohol wipes to get rid of the clammy-hand smell."

Quoted from the mass effect wik codex entry.

And yes, considering it's an input interface, it would not be difficult to change or impliment.

Edited to hopefully make that readable.

If it's common enough for people to get micro-chips in their fingers, it would stand to reason it exists almost everywhere. Considering it's in the Destiny Acension (sp?), and a few other ships you visit (Dr. Hart's come to mine from ME1), it would be installed on ships that are both military and basic freighters.

*edit* Come to think of it, it's on the holos to summon taxis as well.

Those freighters were all of the same make in ME1, implying they were manufactured by the same race/company... That does not mean every other company or race uses the same thing...

Especially a race that scrounges and operates in 300 year old ships.

Purgatory isn't the same make as Dr. Hart's ship was. Neither is the Destiny. Also, not all of the Quarian's ships are 300 years old. It would make sense, from a logistics point of view, to move as many of your ships to the new system as possible, so you wouldn't have to drag out the training of your pilots in order to get them to operate old and new ships.

It is also worth noting that the flotilla is claimed to have 50 thousand starships, and only "some" of them are from 300 years ago.

Purgatory wasn't in ME1, and the destiny ascension isn't a freighter....

But that being said, the Quarians situation sounds dire, when they have systems going offline, hulls being breached etc, they aren't necessarily concerned with keeping all pilots on the same system... Living>Making Pilot's life easier.

Not to mention, that to put the system in all areas of a ship necessary, on every ship, and getting the chips for all pilots or members who'd need it.. Would either cost a lot, or take a lot of luck in salvaging.

I said in my quote (if you'd like to look up at it) that it was present in a few other ships you were aboard. Not a few other ships from ME1. Dr. Hart's ship was simply an example that happened to be from ME1.

But beyond that, the codex entry lists the Flotilla as only containing "some" ships from 300 years ago. Which would mean at the very most, less than half. So it's entirely possible that they have more modern ships than you are accounting for.
