Dragon age isn't nearly as good a game as BG2. ME2 comes close but the lack of banter and party exchange kills it.
Dragon age had no villian. The blight is an unstoppable force, it has no motives, no personality. Unlike Irenicus, and the extreamly clever design by the writers to have the Bhaalspawn taint take his form to increase his presence even still.
Dragonage's loot=Horrible scaling and completely boring progression. Infact....bioware games typically suck at loot. Even as far back as KOTOR, loot has been boring as hell, bg2 probally is the only exception.
BG2 Loot was signiciantly more fun to find and acquire.
Dragonage combat=CC the mages, aoe CC/Tank the fighters, kill. Every pack is the exact same. Sure you CAN do things differently by why? Not CCing the mage leaves them open to CC you and not tanking/ccing the melee/archer pack ensures your squishies are going to die due to sheer numerical damage values. BG2 combat varies greatly depending on your party and what you're fighting.
Morrigan is a ****, there is no depth to her personality. She claims to favor strength and survival of the fittist, but she goes out of her way to ****** people off and then acts like she doesn't care about them. There is no appeal to her except her beauty, she's not even interesting, she hates flemeth but seems bent on becomming exactly like her even if she doesn't get possesed by her
I would argue the Viconia depth comparison, but I have too much nostolgia in the way to be able to stand unbiasedly by the comparison, but from a mechanics and story point of view BG2 is a better game.
BG2 also didn't have damn memory leaks and constant crashes at release.
BG2 combat was 19 times of 20 a silly excercise in tiptoeing towards the enemy an inch at a time so you only activated them one or two at a time. That was often a total immersion breaker for me. It was worse in BG1, but still a problem in BG2.
I won't argue about loot as I have already explained that I don't care all that much about loot and inventory anyway. That's why Mass Effect is so great. I can concede that there isn't all that much party banter in Mass Effect, but then again, the amount of party banter in BG2 wasn't that great either. Party banter in Dragon Age is vastly superior to BG2 both in terms of how much there is in the game, and the quality of it. BG2 had two decent and one horrible romance, but no real interaction
with the companions compared to both Dragon Age and Mass Effect, where
you can talk a lot with all companions regardless of if you are romancing
them or not.
I have the same nostalgia issues with Viconia, and in a way she made a bigger impact on me than Morrigan, but i still contend that Morrigan is much better written than Viconia or any other "bad girl" Bioware have ever written, if you peel away the nostalgia.
And Mass Effect has Tali, which ought to say it all...
You can tip toe in Dragonage too. Few encounters are truly linked(and BG2 had linked encounters as well)
I like loot when done well. It was done well in BG2...it was done ok in Kotor...and it's gotten worse ever since.
Actually BG2 had a ton of banter, and alot of it was a great deal more meaningful then DA:O banter was.
Keldorn eventually having enough to do with Viconia, Haer'Dalis wooing Aerie and challenging you for her, the romance cat fights. Jan Freaking Jansen and Minsc are way funnier then Alistar ever was(though Ohgren's drunk rants in camp do come close)
Of course DA had more, it came after, in a time when voice conversation in video games is a small chunk of the space requirement of a given game, back then voice over work was very rare, especially of the quality and quantity of BG2
But mostly BG2 had a better story. It had better side quests. Lord Jierdan Firekrag > Killing some darkspawn in some fields somewhere after reading about it on a bulletin board.
Dragon age you're fighting a Blight with no personal stake in the matter. The closest human element in your struggle if Loghain, who isn't really a bad guy, simply misguided and arrogant.
I'll have to replay BG2 to reevaluate the Viconia romance, but I am not impressed by MOrrigane, even if she is the best bad girl romance, she's 1 of 3. Jack is pushing it even, as she's more of a broken toy then a bad girl.
To...add to the OP.
If ME2 had better party interactions and chr banter...it would of topped BG2 as the best rpg and my favorite game of all time. As it stands it's #2.
And tali is my favorite romance option in any video game ever and only 2nd to Aribeth in potential appeal.
