I don't see it though.  If I was going to go through the process of repurposing a species to use as my slaves, the absolute first thing I'm getting rid of is free thought.  That's quite a bit more important than replacing digestive systems or whatever with tech.

Also, Mordin mentions many "cloned generations" at one point I believe, so even the argument that the general was alive and possessed a longer time doesn't seem to hold weight with me.  Free thought had to have gone in the first generation of collectors.  I doubt the general has been alive 50k years.

Kept in cryogenic suspension until needed?  Allowed to keep higher thought processes in case innovation is needed in carrying out the Reaper's tasks?
