Which suggests there's a very small selection of conditions that still kill us. I'd imagine prion-based conditions still exist, as they are shockingly hard to eradicate (though equally hard to contract), and evidently a genetic ailment or two, but it certainly does appear that the future is only looking up for humanity. It's just odd that they make points about us being healthier and much longer-lived than we are now, but some background characters just....die.

Fair enough, I'd forgotten about the Codex quote. How about a traffic accident or something of the sort then?

In fact, when I was in the planning stages for my fic, I'd toyed with the idea of Garrus' mother dying in a traffic accident (along with his little sister...yes, I'd thought about giving Garrus a little sister), which was part of the reason why his father was so aloof. But it was too similar to Tali's situation, so I just dropped the idea. And the little sister too. Garrus probably works best as an only child.

An only child with maybe a mom who left his dad for being too much of a workaholic.

I think Garrus had a rather good childhood. His high self confidence and maturity way beyond his years must have come from somewhere. So I think his parents was probably demanding but loving and fabulous. And besides it would be nice with a character who didn't have the standard hard childhood for once...

Perhaps he had it a bit too easy as he gets frustrated when things don't go his way. He was not prepared for the harsh, unfabulous and complicated reality in C-sec.

Which kind of gives another point in the direction of being an only child. Turians already have the whole sense of duty hard coded into their nurturing. Being the only child with a work-a-holic da and a mother who may have left because of it (or maybe not, but was just... there?)

Makes you wonder what kind of turian woman... gah, no, it just makes you wonder about turian women. Damn it. It's hard to guess these things when we really have almost no cannon fem turians to base stuff off of. /growl

Hmm, I really don't know about "loving and fabulous". He really doesn't sound close to his father, and there's NO mention of his mother. I don't think it was a hard childhood in the sense that he got beaten or anything. Just that neither of his parents seem to have been very emotionally involved in his life. I can see "demanding", I can't see "caring and encouraging". Happy childhood is Ashley, without a doubt. Compare how she talks about her parents and sisters to how Garrus talks about his dad: it's quite a significant difference.

@ Sialater: That sounds plausible. But in that case, why wouldn't Mama Vakarian take little Garrus with her?

Turian social pressure, perhaps? We've very little insight into the non-military aspects of their culture.

The lack of information on turian women is frustrating. We know that Garrus' dad wasn't home that much, because he mentions seeing him on vids etc. But where was his mother? Was Garrus home alone all the time? Every turian has to serve the state somehow, and we now turian females also serve in the military... but what about moms? What are they doing? Garrus was very fixated on his dad and doing his job. Why doesn't he talk about his mom?

a) He forgets to mention her
B) He doesn't want to talk about her, because she was not nice
c) He doesn't talk about her, because he's very professional and his mom has nothing to do with it
d) He doesn't talk about her, because there is no mom to talk about (died/left when he was very young)
e) He doesn't talk about her, because BW forgot about her

I hope we get to talk more about this stuff in ME3, because come on... we're in a relationship, I WANT TO KNOW MOAR ABOUT MY DATE.

f)He doesn't talk about her because she might embarrass him?

Something Garrus likes to point out to us is that he's not a very good turian.

Maybe he got that from his mom?

IDK, I'm just tossing crap out there.

I'm ticked off today. /crawls under a rock

That's not necessarily true. Ask my brother and me about our dad and his role in our upbringing, and we'll start talking about the bad things first. The things Garrus says about his dad, pretty much reminds me of my own dad. My dad is a good man, and he was only a terrorist when it came to education and jobs, but these things will probably always 'overshadow' the good things, because those things have the biggest impact. It is possible Garrus and his dad shared good moments when Papa Vakarian finally had a day off and decided to spend some time with his son, but Papa Vakarian's rigid principles are something Garrus will always remember. 'Loving' and 'demanding' can be combined, if Papa V did it in Garrus' best interest.

But maybe I'm projecting my feelings a bit too much now... and I'm distracted by football :P

Canadadians and Americans, for some reason, insist on calling football, soccer. XD Also, BF will hit me with a wok if I say 'soccer'.

I don't have embarassing parents :D. After BF met my mom for the first time, he said "wow, I thought my mom was cool. Yours is even better." w00t

We need to do that.

And yeah, hey guys. Been writing a story for my character on CDN. I think its ganna turn out to be awesome. Wanna know he is? His name is Neil DeVore. Maybe you guys seen some of his comments on Cerberus Daily News. =p

And yeah...overlord. I was kind of hoping that at least one squad member would say something, even if it was like a word. You know, when garrus gets locked in and shepard is outside he could of yelled out "Shepard!" or something.

I think it takes some time to truly apreciate our parents and forgive their flaws. Garrus is still a young turian.

You guys/Gals so need to do this for Garrus!

Garrus plugs it from off-camera with the assault rifle while it's  right next to Shepard. There's a cut to him re-slinging it, a "that turian..." head-shake, and business as usual.

Generally speaking, in Bioware games, characters' stories usually focus on only one parent. The other parent is either never mentioned or is unimportant and mentioned only once or twice.

That always bugs me.  It's SO consistent with them, even though I otherwise love their writing.  I don't understand the constant reliance on daddy issues and dead parents as plot points.  There are other ways of making characters realistic and flawed.

You'd think it would dawn on them that they have a fanbase that has played ALL of their games and can see the sotry patterns by now.

Ah, well... maybe Garrus won't have to have revenge of some kind in ME3.

So I just returned from Overlord's Atlas Station...

Time to post some screenies! Not all of them have Garrus, but hey.

I've had this happen with Mordin as well. The expression basically raises the place where the "eyebrows" should be a bit too much, resulting in a comical stare.

Maybe this has something to do with it being a game focused around kicking a ball with your feet. But I don't know, it's hard to say.
