As a male player of primarily FemShep, I can say with certainty that my Shepards do not look anything like me. Given that I might go in for a new gaming PC to engage with the modded s/s romance arcs, I might end up never having one that looks like me. Yes, Hale's VA work is sufficiently better, IMO, to justify accelerating the purchase of a ~$4K gaming rig (I can't half-ass computer hardware, and luckily don't have to) instead of "try a male Shepard".
Guess I'm just weird. Or, quite possibly, have played a
zillion sci-fi titles in which Generic Male Space Marine #24 saves the world, and there's something refreshingly modern about a female front-line Marine commander.
EDIT: And while everyone's talking about it, add me to the "I just can't get into Dragon Age' list. Maybe it's just that I've played that story at a tabletop too many damn times (saw the chatter about LARP earlier, my local scene is terrible but my bookshelf groans under the weight of WoD & L5R books), maybe it's that it's set in the Kingdom of GreyAndBrown, maybe it's the voiceless main character I don't feel anything for, maybe it's the hand-holding of squadmates to save them from the lemming-like AI. Hard to say.
