DA:O type banter in ME would be all kinds of awesome...Unfortunately, the folks at BW have been heard to say that they'll be implementing the Awakening-type of dialogue in DA2. Apparently, they think the DA:O dialogue mechanics are "broken".

That doesn't bode well for DA, so if they're going that way, I don't think I'd want ME to take example on it.

What's the difference between DA and DA:A banter?

@ Collider: It's weird to me that you put Shale and Oghren in the same category as Sten and Morrigan.

True - but they can be negative sometimes. It's hard to gain approval
with Shale a lot of the time. At least on this playthrough. I don't
like using gifts so I could be out of luck. Before you take care of
Branka (and disregarding banter), Oghren is negative and kind of
unfriendly.

Sten's humorous moments are few and far between (cookies! and the fact that he likes kittens, but that's about it),

Very true. I'm glad I'm getting plenty of approval from him on this playthrough, I hear it can be hard to do so.

Just felt like posting that. This is pretty much how Sten is (and other "tough" male characters in video games). They aren't allowed to smile.

Really? Sten is very easy to get high approval from. You just have to figure out what he likes and what he doesn't like. He's been my favourite since my first PT.

Sten *does* smile if he likes you enough. It's just easy to miss.

Anyway, Garrus. Garrus smiles are not easy to miss.

I don't have any favorite squadmates from Origins... my favorite character would be Duncan though. (My poor favorite characters. Even on the rare chance it's a good guy, look what happens.) I had some favorite characters in Awakening.

In Mass Effect, Garrus was my favorite squadmate right from the start.

I still haven't bought awakening. I heard it was too short to be worth the money.

In DA:A, you need to click on random objects to trigger convos with your squaddies. Often objects that have no relation to your characters whatsoever. Like a tree. For Anders. Who's a mage. And the objects are specific to characters: if you don't bring Anders along when you see that tree, you won't be able to trigger a convo with the squaddies you do have with you. Admittedly, I haven't played Awakening yet, but most of the people who have say that it's a retarded system. From what I know, I agree.

Dunno, you can get tons of approval with Shale for her personal quest; Also a decent chunk during her recruitment. You just need to understand the way she thinks. As for Oghren, you can't really talk to him before you deal with Branka (no party convos available), so it didn't really stand out to me.

Very true. I'm glad I'm getting plenty of approval from him on this playthrough, I hear it can be hard to do so.

Yeah, I don't really like Sten, so he was guarding my party camp for most of my playthrough. Kinda hard to gain approval if you don't bring him anywhere...Then again, it's not that hard to figure out how he thinks either. And yes, he does smile. Once. After you find his sword and give it back to him. Comic made me chuckle though Image IPB

I don't really pay attention to how long games are... they always take me long enough to finish. I liked Awakening, but it seems like a lot of people didn't.

No love for Sten :crying:. I love him so much. And he smiles twice! Also in the end, when you talk to your companions after the finale.

But hey... Garrus. :D

There are some place convo triggers for the squaddies to talk to each other in Awakenings.

The item ones are for the PC to talk to the squaddies.

It's still a really awkward system. I mean...if I want to talk to someone, I'm going to address them, not a tree Image IPB Imagine needing to click on a bush to talk to Garrus.

@ Cerrydd: Yeah, I wasn't entirely sure whether the post-archdemon convo was him smiling, but I'll give you that. Twice then.

You can also talk to squadmates at Vigil's Keep, just like the conversations at camp in Origins.

The only thing missing was romance options...

Wow, we're really going off topic with this Dragon Age nonsense.

Has anyone noticed this trend? All Garrus fans like Tali and all Tali fans like Garrus.

I sense a romance fiction....

You can ask him, "don't you ever smile?" and he answers that he is smiling. His facial muscles just don't work that way :P

Also, clicking objects to get a conversation... it's already in ME2 in a way. In the hub worlds you have to click a box to get a remark from a squadmate. I prefer the DA:O style banter, like Tali and Garrus on the Citadel.

Well, I don't think all fans of Garrus or Tali like both... probably just a lot of them like both. A lot of Garrus fans like Alistair too, but I don't. I do like Tali though, and my MaleShep was going to romance her before he got caught in the Liara trap. (He's still going to, it'll just take a lot longer now that I have to replay a large part of ME1.)

Yeah, but you don't miss out on anything important if you don't click those hotspots. Not clicking on a convo hotspot in Awakening can make you miss out on characters' personal quests, from what I hear. I didn't know about the Vigil's Keep convos though, that's good to know. Mitigates the case a bit, it does.

@ Cra5y Pineapple: Nahh, Garrus/Tali is one pairing I will *never* be able to see. Probably because I don't see them as being all that close even without romance being thrown into the equation. Also because they both seem so solidly associated with Shep, whether male or female. That being said, in a FemShep storyline, since there's no MaleShep for her to sigh over, I can see Tali eventually becoming interested in Kal'Reegar. Simply because he's the most eligible quarian male we ever get to meet.

I think something's a little messed up with the personal quests... I never got Oghren's, or Sigrun's. Maybe it was because I recruited Sigrun last and didn't take Oghren out much, but I like the system in ME2 better. That way, you can't miss them.

I don't think I'd want to see any characters paired with each other and not Shepard. It just seems wrong somehow. xD

 I really, really hope they are just rickrolling us. The biggest complaint I've heard about Awakening was how the dialoge system was handled. It just felt so...blah, like I was playing any-old RPG and not Dragon Age.

My biggest wish is that they would combine the two systems: Origins style as the base with "Dialogue Landmarks" added in. Would do wonders for immersion to converse with your party during a mission.

But hey... Garrus. :D

But then he gets sad again once he realises the cake is a lie.

I have never got the whole Tali/Garrus thing. And not just in terms of romance (although yes, I have shipped them in crack-fic on these boards ). The thing is... I've never noticed much in game to indicate they actually like each other. Even the elevators conversation felt more like Garrus was jibing Tali about the floatilla, with maybe a hint of pseudo-friendly nostalgia (but let's face it, the elevators conversations between those 2 in ME1 were downright confrontational at times). I know a lot of the fans see their 'banter' as a brother/sister thing. It has never felt that way to me. I dunno. That being said: I think they'd be more likely to bang than be buddies (a whole "man-you-get-on-my-nerves-i-really-wanna-punch-you-oh-hai-sex-now?" kinda thing.) Easing tension: they both need it! (in a world without FemShep/Gar, of course);)

I'm actually not super-mad-in-love-with Tali. I like her, don't get me wrong, but on my list of awesome she comes after Garrus (natch!), Wrex, Mordin, Thane, Grunt, Legion and possibly Kaiden (he is on my naughty list unless he redeems himself in ME3...).

Man - I've just realised how little love I have for the female characters in the ME  universe. FemShep aside (Jennifer Hale is a goddess!)

Honestly, whatever gets me more dialogue with my squaddies and other favored characters in ME3 will make me happy.
