All three backgrounds and all three service histories are basically the players choice. That's one of the things I like about the Mass Effect games. You can play (almost) any type of character you want. :D Even a Shepard who likes Saren, if you choose all the right dialogue options - saying that Saren's idea was smart when Anderson tells Shepard about their history, Paragon him at the end, etc.

Oh I didn't mean that Shepard has to let go of his/her past...I just mean what Shepard is doing now is significantly different from what s/he is doing now. So far as ME1 and ME2 goes - Garrus respects what Shepard is doing. Of course, there are probably things that Garrus would disapprove so far as choices go - like saving Morinth - but I think that Dragon Age did approval better anyway.

I've seen only one espisode on cable when I was staying in a hotel for work - it looked pretty intense - does something bad happen?

Just to say something on topic, it seems I'm part of the group of characters who took the high emotional charge option for my first character (even if I've replayed the game with her, she's still my first (and only <3 xD)).

Being someone who actually could put behind the great suffering brought by loosing everyone you ever get close to gives the chara the distance and the cold blood we see in most heroes (don't they all have a high-emotionally-charged past?) yet the warmth and the need of taking the loneliness away that could walk him/her into becoming "the ultimate hero", Paragonish yet not too cheesy.

Even though, as I've been playing I've started to want to experiment with other kind of charas (I'll never get rid of that poor girl who lost everything and wanted to keep the universe alive just to make sure she wouldn't get killed anyone who cared about her again), and I'd like to try with both (well, with all the) possibilities, since it's also an interesting background.

I don't remember background related missions aside from a girl from Midnoir in ME1 as far as Colonist concerns. Am I missing something?

Finch (who kicks off the Earthborn background mission) waits by the Rapid Transit kiosk outside Chora's Den, while there's someone your mother used to serve with in the Wards Access Corridor for Spacers.

Bug, the show is seriously pretty rad... I watch it for the crews now... and well, I knew this episode was coming... I'm still pretty sad though. /sniffle
One of the ships captains died back in Jan during crab season.  They just air'd the episode. /sniffle

A Dragon Age style approval system would be better. It was so weird how the squadmates' opinions would change depending on who you brought with you during ME1. xD And no matter how mean Shepard is to certain characters, they still like him/her. (It would have helped me out a lot if that was the case with Liara.)

@ Mentatzoee: All three backgrounds get their own personal quest. Colonist gets Talitha (the girl from Mindoir), Earthborn gets to decide to help a member of their old gang or not, and I haven't seen the Spacer one firsthand yet but I'm pretty sure it involves Shepard's mother.

And I certainly didn't mean to suggest my "youth at risk" interpretation of the Earthborn background was "more correct" than any other, just my personal read of it suggests a kid who was looking for guidance and figured out just in time she was getting the wrong kind.

I find the Colonist background a little harder to reinterpret - though one of you did a damn fine job in their ME1 fanfiction (I don't recall who, but credit-taker for the one with Second Strike, come on down!) - but otherwise I'd agree there's a lot of leeway in the Shepard backgrounds.

Tee hee.  Love you guys.  Am looking forward to playing Overlord tomorrow.  And now I can be unfaithful to TWO handsome humans instead of just Kaiden.

It doesn't count when you're in outer space.

Overlord is pretty good DLC. Gets a bit creepy at the end, but in a good way.

(I have to say it, I'm replaying Legion's LM with Garrus as a squadmate and they DO actually talk. And this is heaven, I've got my favourites by my side, and it's a pretty amusing mission. No one here does also have a "thing" for Legion too? -even if Garrus is the best, and Turians in general rule- Legion does have a certain something that...)

EDIT: I found Overlord creepy all the time. This isn't really a spoiler, but be warned:

WHAT'S WITH THE DAMN MUSIC? Stop playing with my brain! Put that thing off! And these noises made me jump from the chair each time I heard them.

The noise the AI makes was annoying most of the time. Then it became creepy at the end when you actually find out what it's saying.

It's on my list of stuff to read when the mood strikes.

Coll, I just re-did the Overlord mission on a different Shepard.... and the voice now creeps me out through out the whole thing.

It's all pretty creepy, when you mix the weird music and the voice. It got me playing scared.

EDIT: And now I'm about to play the part that makes me more nervous of the whole game: "RUN JOKER RUN!"
I swear I almost had a heart attack the first time I played it.

I loved the battle music in Overlord - it was cool!! The whole feeling was definitely creepy. I can't believe I actually cried at the end - I'm just a big girls blouse.

@Stephi you might need hubby close by when you're finished Image IPB
