Does it bug anyone else that turians don't have obvious ears? Or that really NONE of the other races have obvious ears, except for batarians?

The omission of ears in the alien species is refreshing, although it in itself not enough to make alien species "alien" enough for me personally. I will cite the Krogan, Batarians, Salarians, Hanar, Vorcha, Elcor, & Drell as suitably "alien," although the Salarians have clear inspiration from the "greys." As for the others, The Quarians and Volus remain to be seen, literally. Expect the Volus to join the others as "suitably" alien, hope the Quarians follow suit. Would be disappointed if not so.

It's disappointing, yes. I can imagine someone in development saying that the game needed "space babes' - and out comes a race of all female recolored humans who can mate with anyone and are more sexually free than the other species.Alexine wrote...

I found that too with Asari. But I guess it's because Asari were created for men to drool over hot women, thought it didn't really work at times.
I guess it depends on what is considered to be "alien." One thing I like about the Turians, for example, is that they are not just recolored humans + something insignificant (like head tentacles) as is often seen in science fiction. They have a great design that is quite far away from retextured human, and IMO are the best designed aliens I've seen in science fiction. They still retain enough "human" features (physically and mentally) to allow for connection and relation by the audience. Mission accomplished, I say. However, I don't find any of the Salarians, Turians, Quarians, Elcors, etc. were "alien". I guess because I could see what parts of influence these races were created by.

Dunno, I had similar issues with the drell as with the asari, probably because I read that Thane had been created to be physically appealing to the female gamer population. Basically, the male counterpart to the asari. And they're probably the two most humanoid-looking races of the lot, which only strengthens the issue. Turians, krogan, batarians, salarians and elcor are probably the most successfully alien races to me. Sure, it's quite obvious what most of them were inspired by (except the batarians...I can't see what the inspiration for them was), but that's not a problem: they look different enough from humans to work as aliens. As you say, we've yet to see what the volus and quarians look like, but from the looks of it, quarians will turn out to be pretty humanoid-looking. Their body morphology is already very humanoid (barring the legs and 3 digits), and from what we can see of their facial outlines, they have a humanoid facial structure too.
I would've added hanar to the list of successfully alien species, but I can't get past the fact that someone, somewhere is writing tentacle-pr0n about themSurely the developers knew that would happen when they created them...

Almost all (if not all) of the strippers and dancers are Asari, the Consort is Asari, Morinth is Asari, etc etc and so forth. And the Asari outfits.
Case in point: Benezia and Samara. Both of which have about no reason to show off the goods.
I found the Asari as a race to be too "Mary Sue" - or too "perfect." The Turians, the Krogan, and the Quarians for example are more interesting to me because they are imperfect and have unique cultures that do not boil down to "high society."I guess it depends on what is considered to be "alien." Already done by the Japanese in early history, lol.
Yes, true. I was debating whether to include Drell in the list. I decided that, in comparison to the Asari, the Drell are still notably more "alien." I would have liked their eyes to be completely black instead of the weird human-ish eyes beneath, though. I think there is some irony in the fact that the least human love interests are also the most popular among their respective genders (Garrus & Tali).Nilfalasiel wrote...

Krogan are inspired by some sort of reptile, salarians greys, elcor...elephants? Gorillas?
I don't know about the Turians or Batarians though. The Turians seem to be a conglomerate of different animals, though, to some degree. That, or I'm just projecting.I am hoping that they turn out to be more alien than the Asari. Heck, it's even done in ME itself *points to copy of Fornax*
@ Collider: I laughed at "Benezia and Samara have no reason to show off the goods". No, they definitely don't. Especially since Samara turns you down so adamantly when you actually try to woo her. Makes it seem like she's somewhat of a tease, when it's really not what was intended, I'm sure.
@ Alexine: Both genders? That's interesting. I defaulted to women because his character is clearly straight and only an option for FemSheps. But if that's how they originally thought of designing him, that makes the parallel with asari even stronger. Minus the promiscuity, of course, but I guess they were going with the cliché that promiscuous, bi, scantily-clad females would be more appealing to straight males and that good-looking, strong, silent, sensitive, repentant-sinner type males would be more appealing to straight females.
