The asari to me are more Roman (hence all the Roman-ish names for their planets and their attitudes), the turians more Spartan (with their warrior culture and degress of citizenship).

Hmm...It's the other way round, actually. Asari names are usually a mix of Greek and Arabic inspirations (Nyxeris, Thanoptis as examples for the Greek, Samara and Sha'ira for Arabic), and Sha'ira's "job" is actually based on a Greek practice (clicky). 

By contrast, the turians have distinctly Latin-inspired names (Garrus, Septimus, Nihlus, Invictus, etc.). Military culture and public service are also both Roman characteristics. Even the word "turian" is based on "centurion".

Their names are the only reversed aspect. Illium and Thessali are Roman in origin, IIRC. (Illium was the Roman name for Troy.)



I don't dispute the Eastern Indian influences in asari naming conventions.

I'm kind of a Rome nerd, and yeah, the turians strike me as inspired by Republican Rome, as opposed to the more popularly-filmed Imperial Rome. Sparta's class structure was incredibly brutal - the sons of citizens were at times expected to survive by taking food from the helots by force - while the volus are in line with any number of client states of Rome as far as inspiration goes. They're Roman space dinosaur-raptor people, and they're awesome.
