You know, I'd been thinking recently, maybe some of Garrus's "tension" was of the sexual/relationship sort toward Shepard (I do believe her dialogue begins, "You seem tense.").  He does kind of seem to start flirting from the moment you recruit him as Femshep.  Femshep might have just been saying, in her very forward flirt, "Oh hey, Garrus, I noticed you suddenly seem to be attracted to me.  Wanna do something about that?"  Meanwhile, Garrus himself probably didn't even realize he was becoming a little more attracted to Shepard than just as a friend... maybe he told himself that a little flirting was harmless?

Your theory makes more sense than mine, though, because it's a very turian view on things.  Don't want to interrupt the crew, don't want to mess with the mission, gotta be relaxed enough to focus on the mission... Yep.  Very turian.

I could believe that. Why talk about his sexual encounter with that other Turian in front of Shepard? It sounds to me like he could have been hinting at something to Shepard. However he doesn't say it all. Like I said before maybe he thought that Shepard would think it would be a horrible idea or his Turian instinct told him that doing that could mess up the mission. Another hint maybe the thing about women liking scars. Maybe he just said Krogan women so nobody would suspect anything.

See, the thing about telling Shepard about his sexual encounter... That's one of the reasons, and one thing I was rather  over when I first played out the romance.  Now, a guy might talk about things like that to another guy and it's more about being buddies and not flirty at all, and, hey, Garrus is a turian, Shepard's a human, so maybe he sees her as gender-neutral or something.  But, generally?  Guys don't tell girls about their sexploits, not unless they see the girl as another guy, or they want to have sex with the girl.  Like I said, it's entirely possible Garrus doesn't realize why he's saying the things he is.  Maybe it's a sort of subconscious attraction.  Before I'd read much of the romance and thought about it more, the first thing I thought was:  Whoah.  Garrus was dropping some major hints there, wasn't he?

And as for women liking scars, apparently Male Shep gets a different line.  So yes, I'd say it's a flirt.  Though I kind of wish you could counter him with a line like, "It isn't your scar I like."

In all honesty, though, I don't think Garrus would've dismissed a possible romantic relationship just because it was presented to him differently.  Considering how eager he was to take Shepard up on her offer, I think if she'd just made it very clear she liked him as more than a friend in the first place (in some other way besides outright propositioning him), he'd have jumped on that opportunity too.  He knows there's a risk for ruining their friendship, yes... but clearly, if Shepard's willing to take the risk, so is he.  That's not even the biggest risk they're taking--they could, in fact, kill one another.  Allergic reactions and all that.

Oh hell these fan threads are great. Found it weird at first that my wife chose Garrus as the romance for her Shepard.

She chose OneBadAssMother IRL, why wouldn't she choose one virtually? (And seriously, the other choices are Whiner, End of Life Issues, and Skeevy - Batman wins, hands down.)

Steph, now I'm curious. You are a bad person.

Heh it's not that, its just the fact that Garrus isn't exactly very humanoid.

In Dragon Age, she went with Alistair (only 'normal' e-relationship in Bioware games I've seen her have actually), in JE and ME1, she went bi (which I also find very interesting) But now... Garrus! LOL

Whiner Thane and Skeevy Jacob? Heh Alistair was a whiner!

No, Jacob is just misunderstood.

Alistair is a bit whiney... but that's why I toughen him up. And yea, he's a wonderful smart ass.  I love it.

GARRUSSSSSSSS.

On/off topic:  Can anyone figure out the naming of turians?  I know their culture is based on the Romans... but I'm having a hard time giving this character in my head a turian name.  As it stands, she's turning out to be Quint (short for Quintas).

Thoughts?

Definitely agreeing on the subconscious flirtation there. The Manshep line is something like "Well, all the women were always ignoring you and hitting on me, so I guess it's time for you to have a fair shot at it." And I know it's spoken for both genders, but "If I'd wanted take down more than your shields, I would have." Something about the delivery there is so very innuendo-laden (Garrus just has this problem everywhere, doesn't he?).

And particularly with the 'sexploits' observation. All my friends are guys, but the few that get any action (they're also all nerds, so on the whole the new Blood Angels codex is more interesting than a three-dimensional female--not that I disagree) clam up around me. Other discussions about sex, sure. Their own personal experiences? Hell no.

Heh. Hehehe. Hehehehehehe. HA!

It's like Jacob's sales pitch if you're not all about being his priiiiize.

Oh god. I might actually have considered a Jacob romance if he offered to feed my fish, though...

Relationship with Garrus based on respect and friendship... or have living fish. Hmm.

Funny story, she's got a bit of a mouth on her... hence the "nick" name.  Was totally going to give her a krogan sidekick/friend/partner in crime, and the nick name would be a bone to poke her with. XD  SO HAH!  I haz defeated your name calling with my pointy elbows.... /pointypoke

OW! Knock it off, or I will tell Garrus you're a slaver. (What? I'll lie.)

This actually makes it the perfect name. GO GO TEAM QUINT.

@ Castanea: :D I definitely think Dude!Shep needs to be more forward when pursuing his romantic interests. Throw your testosterone around more, Dude!Shep. Make women faint dead away at your unparalleled masculinity! Quick, before Batman Archangel shows up and steals your female krogan fanbase!

Then again, nothing says forward like Sheploo creepy face

Posted Image

Fem!Shep doesn't stand a chance.

@ MarginalBeast: Now I really want to know more about your Shepard. She sounds like she'd be a lot of fun.

@ Brass and Splinter Cell: I actually like the idea of Garrus having a subconscious attraction to Shepard before hand. I...ahem, kind of thought he was flirting with her a bit when he teased her about taking her shields down. But I thought that was just me going "HURR HURR I noticed you had a lovely butt shot--oh, are you hitting on me?"

As for Garrus' "scars" line post-recruitment: I guess Garrus actually does say the whole "some women find facial scars attractive line..." to Dude!Shep if the bottom option is picked, though. Still, I took that line as a predominant Fem!Shep exclusive and ran with it. I still lawl'd at Garrus commenting on Fem!Shep having a weakness for men with scars. Like he kind of was hoping that she would all along or something.

Maybe Garrus was trying to protect himself from becoming too disappointed if things didn't work out in the relationship by staying practical about it? Maybe saying: "oh, ffft, it's only for the sake of the mission, I'm a turian, she's a human it wouldn't last, blah blah" was his way of letting himself down easy. Of course, he is also very "whatever it takes to help you with the mission, Shepard" -- we see some of that personality in Mass Effect as well "If anyone can catch him [Saren] it's you, but if there's anything I can do to help, anything, just let me know and I'll do it."

I'm kind of leaning to this interpretation, given how disappointed he seems to be with himself concerning his work with C-Sec and Archangel. He doesn't want something else to go "badly" so he tries to remain optimistically sensible about it. Maybe he wasn't fully aware of how much he wanted to be with Shepard until she brought up the idea? RAWR RAWR. Thinking huuuuuurts.

Oh, and Garrus.

EDIT: Why does my brain rage!quit when I type? WHY? D:

LARPs, wikis, and more wikis. Since we have no data on female turians ingame, no idea whether their names also resemble Roman ones, but Septimus and, I think, Sidonis are lifted from ancient Rome wholesale. The second link has some meanings/origins that're nice; I've always liked to give my characters referential/meaningful names, and clearly Bioware does too. Take Wrex, for example. There's the obvious 'wrecks', rex like T-rex (he is rather dino-looking), and the slightly more subtle Rex, which is king in Latin. Second game? Wrex is king of the krogan. Ohohoho, I see what you did there, Bioware.

Oh yeah.

What do turians smell like? It's been asked before about Garrus in specific, but... what about the species? My cats, for example, have never been outdoors and smell very faintly of what I'd call good leather and coriander. Human females have either garlic/onion or grapefruit scents, I can't remember what human males have but it isn't the same and it's muskier (apparently men don't smell musk too well but women do).

I'm vaguely thinking bamboo/green tea/fresh-cut lawn, with various undertones depending on gender and individual traits (smokers always reek, for example).

Grapefruit for women? Seriously? Male or female, unwashed human's always had a sort of spicy scent to me.

Gotta be some kind of metallic smell in there, though.

Yep, I was kind of surprised, too, but apparently the people who get paid lots of money to figure this stuff out have, in fact, figured it out.

Metallic or ozone, maybe.

This is way late, but I found a video clip with the Citadel ad referencing "the next time you're out with Officer Vakarian".

I don't hate on the other LI's.  Well, except Jacob.  Posted Image  And I actually feel bad for all of my guy friends who play Mass Effect, because frankly I don't see the appeal in most of the female LI's.  Well, make that the female human LI's.
You have Miranda who is a cold ****, Jack who is a crazy ****, and Ashley who is a racist **** (har har, I kid).

Maybe I just need a penis to truly understand these ladies, but the men (Garrus, Thane & Kaidan) just come off as more charismatic, with an actual sense of humor to them.  One of the main things that bugs me with the female LI's is that they're so serious...since men obviously can't become aroused by a woman with good comedic timing.  Posted Image

Or maybe I just feel bad because we ladies get more options of the alien-variety.  WHO IS THE CAPTAIN KIRK NOW, ****ES?!  Posted Image

Edit: Since when is b!tch censored??
