I imagine Shepard #4 and #2 as brother and sister, so they have an amusing turian-related tattoo story - #2 wanted turian-style face tattoos, #4 tried to talk her out of it with the reasoning that face tattoos would be painful for a human because they don't have metallic faceplates, #4 ended up getting a face tattoo (not exactly turian-style though) and spent the rest of the day holding a bag of ice on his face, and then #2 decided she didn't want one anymore. xD

Never understood the reference, and I haven't watched Hot Fuzz before...
And, I don't know about tattoos, but it sounds like an interesting concept, go for it. I don't think I've heard anything of the sort before.

Also, do any of you think Shepard (male or female) has tattoos? Being an alliance soldier, and all that, I though it may be possible after all. Then I thought it would be cute to write a fanfic of Shepard considering getting Garrus' name tattooed in turian characters, or something like that.
It's silly, I wasn't really going to write it. Just, you know, kinda cool. Also got me thinking for a while about what kind of body modifications, besides facepaint, turians could have. THAT is interesting to think of.
I'm curious as to whether y'all think the Alliance military has tattoo restrictions.
I'm not super informed about present day military standards, but I know it varies branch to branch how extensive and where they can be located. I can see my earthborn Shep having work done from her gang days (useless fact, I am fully sleeved so I think it would be awesome if I could give my Shep tats in game). From the books we know removal has advanced to the point that mercs will get them removed and re-done for missions. Maybe Shep had to get hers taken off when enlisting.

XD Still laughing over the Hot Fuzz ref. That is the best. Hey, isn't there a place in the human head, where if you shoot it, it explodes?? O_O ;P
Kim Shepard: In the beginning of ME1, Nihlus tells you that he put your name forward for the Spectres, and that he's gonna evaluate you. That Eden Prime was to be the first of several missions for you two to do together. 'Cause, y'know, he needs to 'check you out'.... >
Tats: Yeah, my BFF in the AF can only have tats that don't show when she's in uniform. And so far we don't really see too many inked humans at all besides jack, so it's hard to tell. I would think tats would only get more commonplace in the future.

That's actually a good point, Shepard would probably be absolved of all rules. Just the way Garrus likes it. Unless Cerberus forbids it. But Paragon Shepard would screw Cerberus over and resign, so they'd still be absolved of rules.

All true. Technically she also could have done pretty much anything after becoming a SPECTRE and the Alliance wouldn't have been able to do anything about it. I really need to stop thinking so hard about all the details of the Mass Effect universe. Needs more Mass Effect. *sigh*
Oh yeah. Garrus.

That'd sound classic. I wonder how the other party members would react if they heard Shepard say that as well.
I don't know who Nihlus is, or if he's good or not, but I can't wait to meet him, now. Mariah's entire heart will be devoted to Garrus, but I'd bet Nihlus would have been her great friend. Until, if what I think you're saying happened, then she would be really angry. Like how Garrus was.
There must be a method of truly expressing our love for Garrus rather than say his name... Not even just screaming it to the world.
Also, I've finally the pluck to sign up to the fanfiction site... but I need to wait for two days. I guess it gives me more time to think about it.

I would like to see everyone's reactions to that too, but the only squad members who would get to see it are Kaidan and Ashley because the rest of them are recruited later. xD Joker and Dr. Chakwas would be there though. (And Navigator Pressley, the guy who dies in the beginning of ME2. It's more sad if you know him from the first game.) If my other Shepards could be there, they'd have the best reactions.
Shepard #7: Don't worry, we'll get another turian on the team.
--two years later, after Shepard #2 and Garrus hook up--
Shepard #7: I love being right all the time.
@aynxalot: My main Shepard has always liked turians, but never had any luck with getting one to date her. xD Those comments from Nihlus would have been the most luck she's ever had with a turian, so to her it would feel like she was so close and then Saren took it away. Ironically, she had a crush on Saren when she was younger, until she found out that he hates humans,

And, heh at Shepard #7.
By the way, I just thought, did all your Shepards simultaneously die at that moment at the start of ME2?
My Shepard's going to be clean. Slightly boring, but I can't think of anything that I'd put on her.
I just remembered the four year old story. I guess your point's proven, Cerrydd. Though, the magic folder... well, the more forbidden the fruit, the sweeter the taste, and I'm savouring its luscious entirety.
Actually, speaking of the magic folder, I was reading the quite aptly titled fanfiction text file in there, and a mini event made me search a bit and consider.
I've just learnt that other races use translators to communicate and trade with others, yet some can learn alien languages to help in fraternising and ease of communication.
So... do you think Garrus needs a translator, or has he mastered the human language?

I think Shepard #7 is my favorite. Some of those Renegade interrupts were just made for him.
Shepard #7: I can also imitate voices perfectly. >
Garrus: Don't... do that. O__O
I'm not sure about Garrus, but I know Shepard needs a translator to talk to Thane. She said "I think my translator glitched" or something like that when he called her "siha". Maybe in the future, translators will be able to add emotion to the elcors' voices. Now there's an interesting thought.

I always assumed they were both fluent in some sort of galactic basic (the 'common trade language' used in Council space.) Lacking lips, english might prove a challenge for turians to speak.

:3 I would think so. We see Lorik Qui'in, among other turians, struggle with human colloquialisms, but Garrus rarely has that problem. I also have been thinking about the earlier pic and like to think he has a quiet, guilty pleasure in watching old human cop vids. Dirty Harry is probably a favorite (if Blasto is any indication, it's at least vaguely known in the ME 'verse).
LilGarrus: That human officer is my hero!
LilAsari: Pfft. He wouldn't stand a chance against biotics.

He doesn't exactly have lips, but the flesh around his mouth is certainly movable. Stretches when he talks, and so on. It's not a beak. I spent awhile thinking about that once I realized he could make 'ffff' sounds. Course, if you believe that every single thing they're saying is being done via translation, that's not something you need to dwell over.ELE08 wrote...

But I like the idea of them being able to converse without translators. The romantic in me, I suppose.
(and it seems like a terrible idea to stick six+ different languages on a ship and become totally reliant on auto-translate. If a translator broke, there would be chaos)

I've wondered about these issues too; good to get some info. I wonder if Shep then switches wbetween translator and trade language, depending. We know for sure that Shep uses a translater with Thane. But then, drell are rare and so if you're not hanar you probably don'tk now much drell. Seems like turian, asari, salarian, human, and volus would all be pretty easy to pick up for the spacefaring cosmopolitan types. I can see Shep and Garrus using the galactic and not a translator. Then only thing is as ELE08 said it would have to be made up of sounds that could be formed by the vocal cords/lips of all the many species. Seems like it might be limited.
I have also wondered what a turian would sound like without a translator. Do you think the device would modulate the tone/timbre of their voice some too, to make it sound more normal to human ears -- hence the flange? If we assume that natural turian speech reflects the raptor-dino-avian biology, I imagine the "flange" sound woudl be much increased. Lots of growls, clicks (?), maybe even reptilian versions of purrs. Well that description sounds almost like geth, I still think it would have the sound of a voice. Just a growly, purry, sexy voice

Oh dear, I feel very offended by that.
...Meh, I still think it would be a quite interesting/turbulent relationship. Imagine turians existing and we made "the list of 5 people we're allowed to etc. etc."
Lots of interesting viewpoints on the languages, though, it's quite curious, I guess. I've always imagined Garrus's mouthparts to be pretty similar to lips, so I'm not sure english is completely out of the equation. I think if you've got a multi-racial ship you'll definitely have to find some sort of language middle-ground, because, as said, it would be a disaster if the translator broke, there was some interference or some problem. I guess the trade language would be a good place to start.
@ aynxalot: Heh, cute thought. I've never really thought about Garrus when he was young.
Well, language does develop, change and even becomes switched for more favourable or convenient languages for the welfare of liasons with others. I think that as time goes on and aliens communicate with each other, there will be a point when we have a completely universal language convenient for all and where translators won't be needed. I'm sure a way could be found.
Of course, it may not be possible at that point in Mass Effect, but it'd be pretty nice. I'd like to think of Garrus and Shepard in bed together, and not having to use a translator. It seems so... obtrusive.
I'm not sure how the flanging actually works if there's a translator, or how these different voices come across, actually. Perhaps the translator identifies the species, sounds and such, and tries to accurately preserve the voice (and flanging) whilst moulding the sounds so they will be comprehensible by the user.
I'd still think a translator would feel quite obstructive for Garrus and Shepard's intimate moments.
I keep listening to Rule the World by Take That, despite being quite old, and I still think the lyrics fit Garrus.
