The best romances are the friendship-based ones. Although I found Tali's a bit creepy. Garrus may have been awkward but it was certainly interesting. I haven't done Miranda's or Jacob's and I think I won't. They have too much perverted crap involved and not enough emotions involved. As for the tragic ones, I don't know what to say about them.

Yeah, calling it a fling is a little unfair on my part--shorthand for its lack of substance is what I meant. Jacob does seem to what an actual relationship, but there's just so little to it. Same with Miranda, really. One quick conversation about how she feels like a tool to be used and then jokes about how hot she is, really? It's easier to excuse lack of conversations with Tali/Garrus, since we already know them so well, but without the tragedy hook of Thane and Jack, there's just not much to them.

Edit: Rejecting Miranda in the final scene isn't a rejection, you just say 'not now' and she's like 'Focused on the mission to the last. I knew you were the right man for the job.'

So, final scene not a rejection
Miranda (can't find a youtube vid of dumping her, but I can find three of banging her...)
Thane (found it, it is a 'we'll do this later')
Jacob

Flat-out rejection
Tali
Garrus
Jack

With Tali and Jack both in that last category, it seems like the game's implying the people who can't take rejection are more emotionally fragile? Wonder what that says about Garrus. (then again, it's Shepard who says 'we can't be together' instead of 'not now' for those scenes, so yeah. I guess the writers just couldn't see justifying a 'not now' for those romances? Still implies that Garrus is more emotionally fragile, though. Not that I find that far-fetched, given what he's been through, just interesting)

(edited like a zillion times. I can't stand my own typos.)

I actually quite liked the Jack romance.

I think all of the romances in ME2 have a lot of relationship progress, Garrus' included. Some just portray it differently than others.

I just mean that the progress from friends to lovers is usually a shorter walk than from total strangers to Love Of My Life.  The former is a believable amount of change to happen within the span of a few conversations, whereas the latter should almost always take much longer.

I blame any shortcomings entirely on Manshep's voice.  "Captain's orders." Gawd.

Anyone have access to a mod for a romance with the Old Spice Guy On a Horse? He's hotter than Jacob, and 100x more sincere.

You listened to the hidden Femshep/Tali files? Cutest thing ever, I swear. Starts about halfway in.

Oh haha I know. I love Tali's romance, ngl, but sometimes I find I like it better when I just read the subtitles and ignore ManShep's voice. He just sounds so...not into it. He doesn't sound like he really means half the stuff he says to her. But I know it's just a fault of the voice actor, not the actual romance, so it doesn't bother me TOO much.

Listening to Mark Meer voice-act is sometimes like listening to the Elcor production of Hamlet, but without the modifiers at the beginning (i.e., "doleful response:  I knew him, Horatio")
--C'mon, somebody had to say it.

I'm glad they kept the flirtatious "are you blushing" comment in the game. However...it definitely was a let down finding out that was the end of chatting with Tali. She goes from "that's the last time I try to compliment my bosh'tet captain..." to "zomg cleaning engines mmmkay."

But...you know...Garrus Vakarian.

But still, Officer Vakarian.

I finally finished the game. xD In case anyone wants to know, I chose Garrus first for the final battle (I was going to choose him second because I heard it helps the chances of catching him, but I instinctively chose him first as always) - he was the one that shepard caught, but Tali pulled Shepard back into the Normandy at the end (Tali was also the one who told her opinion about keeping the Collector base), which is fine because I'll have to play New Game + eventually to fix a few things for the "perfect" playthrough to import to ME3.

After the mission was over, Garrus actually had one of the least critical comments about keeping the base. I don't remember his exact words, but it reminded me of the scene when Garrus first talked with Shepard about her joining Cerberus - he basically told her to watch out for herself, and he didn't say that she made the wrong choice by handing over the base. Then his next conversation went back to "I'm running some diagnostics, but don't worry, I haven't forgotten what we talked about" or something like that, which I thought worked pretty well. It sounded like he was fixing up the Normandy after the battle, and like they must have talked about something right before the suicide mission... xD

I wonder...if you turn down a LI (provided they survive and are recrutable) will you be able to have the "come crawling back" option in ME3? Would be kinda funny to see DudeShep on his knees after smacking Jack in the face like that. I don't think he'd come out of that one unscathed. That one pissed me off the most.

I'm wondering that myself. What happens if you break up with your LI after the suicide mission and then import that save into ME3? Will the game play out like you never cheated on your ME1 LI (if you had one), even though you did sleep with so-and-so before heading into the suicide mission?

That's another reason why the post-suicide mission dialogue (or lack of it) for the love interests is such a mess. It doesn't make any sense. They act like the final romance scene never happened, even though it did. I can't imagine romancing Garrus, beating the game, breaking up with him, importing that save into ME3 and then have them act like nothing ever happened between them.

But... Tali is just adorable... how could you NOT want to 'mance her?  She's like BFF material that's awkward and cute and GAH!
(Liara is too young in my eyes.  I think I was in a fuge state my very first play of ME1 back like 2 some oddd years ago and I romanced her.  Or maybe Kaiden just frightened me off with that mysterious hair bump... who knows...)

Oh god, I'd never heard those files before.  Why did they take it out :crying:.  On the other hand I suppose this is a good thing, I would have had serious trouble choosing between Tali and Garrus.  (TIME FOR AN EPIC THREESOME, METHINKS)

LOL Well I really liked Liara but since I picked up ME1 after my husband, he was able to guide me in my romance choices. It went something like this:

Me: Babe, how do I romance the big kitty guy? Image IPB
Hubby: You can't. He's not an option. Image IPB
Me: W-what? Image IPB
Hubby: You can only romance the two humans and the blue chick. If you want an alien, pick Liara. She's all right. Image IPB
Me: I can't has the...kitty? Image IPB Screw this! Shep, you're now a cloistered nun. Image IPB

So I essentially held out for Garrus~! But I do have two other Sheps, one for Liara, and the other poor soul who romanced Kaidan and his hair (because, yes, they are two separate entities).

I'd heard that Tali was supposed to be the lesbian romance and Thane was supposed to be the equivalent gay male romance, but I've never found any gay Thane files. Most of that Tali stuff is still in the game, actually. If you pay close attention, it's really abruptly, blatantly cut out, since you go straight from flirting with her (the suit-linking conversation, which is the same as the male flirt dialog that starts the romance) to 'no more lines loop'.

(though I'll still argue that Garrus would make a better gay romance, and not just to stay on-topic)
