Random thought on turian culture (again):

Does anyone get the impression that turians don't do casual touching like humans do? I mean I can't even remember a turian giving a handshake. The only one ever doing any touching in regard to Garrus is Shepard (and she doesn't touch him often even then), except if you romance him--in which case, no, it doesn't cut off straight after the forehead-touching. Watch closely and you notice Garrus reaching out to very gently stroke Shepard's arm/shoulder with the backs of his fingers. That's the only time, apart from if he is rescued by Shepard and/or pulls her up into the Normandy at the final mission, where you see Garrus actually initiate physical contact.

That leads me to believe turians only touch people they're intimate with. Like family, lovers, mates?

Well. My two cents.

Ancient Romans and other warrior based societies discouraged casual touching.  The standout exception was the Spartans who wanted their women to run around half-naked and screw as many good Spartan men as possible in order to make more healthy babies.  Run around is literal, by the way, Spartans encouraged their woman to be physically active and all Spartans preferred to walk on their feet rather than use horses or chariots as other Greeks did.  Digression!

Turian society, with its strict tiers of citizenship, probably discourages casual familiarity.  They do seem to be very formal in their own society; I'm sure Turians from the major colonies look down on the mercs of Omega whereas C-Sec is an honorable posting.  My reasoning behind that is the plague on Omega was barely mentioned on the news, but the Turian military (from Cerberus Daily) sent rescue ships to take care of one of their client races having a similar problem.  All the Turians trapped on Omega died unnoticed and alone, according to the messages you read during Mordin's recruitment mission.

I love the back of the hand touch that he does.  It shows he spent time thinking about the fact that he has talons and she has soft squishy skin.

I'd have to agree.

And, perhaps because he's moving from commander/friend to lover and ties in with his awkwardness is why Garrus respects Shepard's personal space, and so doesn't want to touch her. We've seen Garrus is extremely considerate of Shepard's feelings in quite a few cases, I believe.

Though, I guess turians are quite formal/have a sense of public duty, so that could be another reason to consider, then.

Hmm, I feel like rolling off on another fanfic, it's either going to be a formal party (inspired by this talk about the Kasumi DLC), post-suicide-mission (once again inspired from talk in this thread) or the two having a bit of innocent fun (inspired by a song, mainly). No idea what.

Seriously? It never registered to me that he used the back of his hand to touch her arm. It always looked like his palm....hmmm. Eh- either way, he's wearing gloves, which I found unnecessary. I know he wouldn't be prancing about half-naked (wishful thinking), but gloves? Really, BW?

Also, back to the subject of the turians and krogans knowing about each others testicles as though they're college fratboys, I always read Wrex's comment as suggesting maybe one of a turian's 'jewels' is larger than the other (which, if I am not horribly mistaken, is similar to humans), but not that they're -small-.

ETA: Ah, and one more unnecessary argument for external. Mordin warns of chafing, which to me suggests while human ladies have, ahem, sensitive skin in certain *koff* areas, turian hide is thick and rough. Everywhere. Including areas that would be important to protect from radiation.

He wore gloves? For stupid some reason I thought his hands actually looked like that, despite the colour of the skin on his face.

Well, I guess that's a better thought.

Yessssss! More high-res Garrus~
You're a saint for compiling these...
Considering the size of the files, you should probably release it in segments.

The best part is that FRAPS, when outputting jpegs, outputs them at high-quality low-memory.  So instead of a BMP output converted to jpeg, which is what I was doing before, these come raw.  So they tend to stand at 200kb a pop, which means 100+ per 30mb.  It's epic.

Question inspired by my Word of the Day text that I get....does Garrus's name come from "garrulous"?

Also did anyone notice the Cerberus news where it said that an apocalyptic end-times sort of religion is gaining ground on Earth, Palaven, and then some planet I'd never heard of (don't know what race it was associated with). More anecdotal evidence of turians and humans having attitudes in common....although the news thingy said the rest of galactic society regards the religion as very radical. So when turians go radical they do it in a human way? (or vice versa you could say).

I don't know if that's the inspiration, but Mordin fits the definition perfectly (excessively fast-talking, rambling, wordy) ;)

Yeah. I couldn't decide if it was the root of his name because he doesn't seem especially talkative. Even in ME1 before the infamous calibrations rebuff. He talks about as often as everyone else....

Looking at its meaning, I doubt it was what the name was based on, but it's a possibility that the character's name may be slightly inspired by the sound of the word. I sometimes wonder how they can come up with these names.

Yeah. What about Vakarian? I never took Latin, but since so many turian words/names are based on it, I wonder if there is a similar word in Latin?

I think I've missed over 15 pages here. xD Is there any Garrus-related news I should know about?

I don't think Garrus fits the description, but the word reminds me of a scene from my favorite movie. :D Actually, the guy from the movie didn't fit the description either... so who knows?

Does that make his name ironic?

Anyway...it's only been about a page, but it sounds like this thread's preference is external.
XD

While I would like to see this thread get to 200 pages, I can't think of anything else to talk about/respond to.
Yaaaaay Garrus! You better be on my six come Mass Effect 3...!

Considering the fact that he doesn't talk much because he's always in the middle of calibrations... yeah, I think that makes his name ironic. xD

Shepard #2: *gathers all of the Shepards* Come on, let's raise the giant Garrus support banner!

Shepards: *lift a giant banner that says "We Support Garrus In ME3*

I think Garrus comes from "garrison."  In fact I think I read as much somewhere.

And aynxalot, I figured it'd be the legs and thighs getting chafed. I don't think their evening would play out like the lust murder from Se7en.

I studied Latin for a year in college, and I don't recall any words similar to either Garrus or Vakarian, unfortunately. I can't find any in my old and well-worn Latin textbook/dictionary, either. Of course, like I said, I only studied it for a year (which got me to intermediate level at best), so it's entirely possible there's a Garrus-like Latin word out there that I just don't know. :P

I'm all but 100% sure it comes from "garrison."

–noun

1. a body of troops stationed in a fortified place.

2. the place where such troops are stationed.

3. any military post, esp. a permanent one.

Don't know what Vakarian comes from. Could come from vicariance, "The separation or division of a group of organisms by a geographic barrier, such as a mountain or a body of water, resulting in differentiation of the original group into new varieties or species." Or vacaria, which is latin for "waste ground." Or vaquero, which is Spanish for "cowboy"?

Garrus always sounded vaguely arthurian to me for some reason (all those G names.  Gareth, Gaheris, Galahad.)  Umm, there's some Roman influence in there somewhere right?  Knights of the round table, all that.  I'm no expert so this is just me talking out my arse.

This

is friggin amazing.

And throw me in the external genitalia camp (wow, never thought I'd type those words together.)  They seem very similar physically to humans in every other way aside from having a thicker hide/skin.  Also, that's what I'd prefer so I makes it so :wizard:  At least until BW says otherwise.

Well, I'm sorry too. Last time I said anything I got chewed out. And that time wasn't a joke. I got a little defensive.
