Insanity difficulty: I shall share all of this information w/ my DH. He's taking way too long with his Insanity playthrough. I need my ME & Garrus fix, dangit!!! (Okay, well, he's getting better, but still. I have a playthrough and a half to finish. <3)

Thane: Tried romancing him. When my Shep started talking about "too soon to call it love, but really, that's what it is anyway", I blarfed and went running back to Garrus.

Fanfic: I got around the intimacy/first name thing by having Garrus be so used to calling her Shepard that calling her anything would feel awkward and forced. :P Or using a special context of "Commander" as a pet name- and Shep calling him "Officer" in the same way. Just seemed fitting given their "Battle Couple" relationship.

However, I was inspired by someone's fanart to do a fic for the Sole Survivor Shepard (whom I've done, like, 3 times.....) It makes little/no sense that SS Shep would willingly work for Cerberus, when it was them that got her whole squad killed. So, some angst and drama to be had there. Of course, as always, Garrus will be there to help with her crisis! Mmmmmm....

OT: The virus I picked up that killed my comp was on DeviantArt. I picked up a few from there, but my antivirus always took care of it, until this latest one. Anyone else have this problem? And it's a big problem, b/c that's where most of the Garrus art I picked up was. >:(

From deviantart? Really? I've never gotten anything from that site (aside wanting to kill myself from some of the "art" on the front page) Are you sure it's from DA? I have adblock so that might have to do with me not getting anything.

Those ads on DA are seedy indeed. I've gotten several alerts from my virus program but have yet to be infiltrated...at least not intentionally...But yeah, they're from the ads.

Enh. That explains it. *Sigh* Maybe I'll just go back and download the folder- a lot of the artwork is in that.

*L* Not intentionally infiltrated....nice.

Anywho, Garrus. And I have to wonder why they released a Sheploo trailer for the Kasumi DLC and not a FemShep. Maybe they want her to be a surprise.

Sheploo is their iconic Shepard, and they paid money for Vanderloo's likeness.

The thing Thane lacked was humor. I want a man who I can laugh with. Garrus made me laugh many times, while Thane only made me giggle once ("Be still Mouse, you can change your pants in a moment"). The way he talks about everything is depressing. He isn't exactly someone I want to come home to after a hard day of work.

Take Thane with you on Samara's recruitment mission and he wishes the Biotic God a restful sleep and dreams of many bulbous women.

Wait, there was Princess Bride reference I missed!  And I bring him every time so I can hear him and Garrus **** about the suicide orders.

Must be because I bring Garrus, too.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure their likeness contract prevents them from using any Shepard OTHER than Vanderloo. The closest they ever got to advertising Femshep is the back of the ME1 360 case; there's a helmeted female wearing N7 armor in the top-middle picture, talking to Wrex. And even then the contract prevents them from outright saying 'this can also be Shepard', they can only imply it (since there are no female N7s in the game other than Femshep).

Ugh. Reading a story right now. It's so annoying when they call Shepard by her first name. I don't want to hear about YOUR Shepard I want to read about MY Shepard, GAWD.

But I can't write a story about your Shepard.  I never met her.

I feel like the pathetic minority in that I actually like reading stories about well written Shepards who aren't mine. Ah well. Ambiguous Shepards are just like...inviting self-insertion by proxy. I want engaging characters, Shepard included, and even really like "novelizations" that explore the internal dilemmas in the main characters. Am I really alone on this?

PS My good buddy's main Shep's name is Shepard Rogelio Shepard. No worries if he gets promoted. xD

I don't actually mind it either, since I've yet to meet any Shepard that reacts like mine does to events, why not add in identifying details?

I do try to keep the details to a minimum, though. That's why I write in first person.

I get really confused when browsing dA sometimes because of some crazy hidden ad that has sound...usually advertising dish detergent or something. Late at night, it's hella scary.

If you don't already have it, I recommend running Malware Bytes once a week. Hell, it's fast enough to run daily if you don't mind leaving your computer alone for half an hour.

So...yeah. Calibrations.

Eh, when I wrote the GarrusxFemShep romance story, commander and Shepard seemed like the right things to say, then. Endearing terms lay it on a little thick, and as fairly complained, putting in my Shepard's first name does make it a little difficult for people to empathise in the story using their own characters. I did write in the first person, however, it made expressing and empathising a lot easier, but the main problem will be ambiguity, because if we want a Shepard that fits all, we need a hollow, shallow shell. I made my Shepard was quite Paragon and quite sensitive, which gives a character, but I guess it does push out some readers.

So, basically, personality is something I can't deny myself, but I do leave out major physical descriptions and other definining characteristics of the Shepards, such as name, so readers can fit themselves in. Unless their Shepard is bald/breastless/male.

Eh, I don't really get annoyed when author's use very specific descriptors for Shepard, I just don't read it.  If it was official material, then that would be cause for alarm, but fan fic is fan fic.  I have never read one that is completely true to my personal Shepard for the reasons stated above but I have found some that were pretty close.  That said, I personally leave out all physical identifiers and a first name in my fics because even though I write them for myself, I do post them with the hope someone out there gets some entertainment out of them and know this is a pet peeve for a lot of people.

I have way more of a problem when I read fics where Garrus seems out of character.  There are some things I just don't see him ever doing.  Like getting into jealous fisticuffs.

Sheploo is here to stay.  As much as I love my custom, she will never look as good as Sheploo (texture wise) because he was scanned from a real person and made with loving detail.  Bioware isn't going to put a femshep in an ad because they probably want to showcase the game's graphics and custom sheps just aren't going to look as good.  I really really wish they had made a default femshep as detailed as the default Sheploo, but that ship has long since sailed.

*Grumbles about Sheploo* Yeah, well....balls. Turian ones.

I agree about the Garrus being out of character nitpick. I mean, there's some leeway, but I've read a few...notably one very, ahem, in-depth love scene, where he was pretty out of character and it just was awful. Not the writing, the writing was good, but the ambience was destroyed.

Which is why I tend to avoid reading fanfiction a lot of the times. It's hard not to feel offended if someone seems to butchering a character's personality. A lot of this character assassination seems to stem from people projecting their own desires onto the character.

I'm not sure if I've come across a fanfic where this happened, but sometimes I do just phase this instance of character out of what I already know, and sometimes it helps me think of him or her better as this other person. Sometimes I just enjoy reading or writing the emotions expressed in fiction and people.

The one problem I have with Garrus is getting him out of character. We're not given a whole lot, even across two games. I also don't buy the whole, "He's been in love with her since the Presidium," thing either that I've seen in a lot of fics.

It was easier to write Zevran than it is to write Garrus.

I keep the identifying characteristics to a minimum, but I still put them in. But I try like hell to keep him in character.

Yea. I've seen stuff like this before. Like I said, I imagine it to be projection. I also think it's a disservice to Garrus to say that he fell in love with her at first sight. It may be romantic to some, but I'd like to think that Garrus is less shallow. Not to mention the romance doesn't seem to give any indication that the presidium thing has an ounce to it.

There are some things that other people see as OOC that I would not. Perhaps I just view the character differently.

For example, I usually hear people saying that they just don't see Kaidan getting mad or getting into a fight. But my observation is that if he is passionate about something, he's not going to be the laid back meek Kaidan most seem to think he is. Do I think he'll fight for Shepard? Absolutely. He confronts you about Liara. Sure, he didn't seem very aggressive then...but that was before Ilos. Now that you know that night apparently meant everything to him and that he loved you...I just don't think it would be out of character for him to get some fire in his eyes.

But I digress...
I too cannot read a GarrusXShep if Garrus seems OOC to me. Shepard, on the other hand...it's all to-may-tos to-mah-tos to me.

Ugh. I should do a playthrough where FemShep romances Liara. I want to think about how Liara would react to Garrus... (Didn't someone make a Riddick reference?)

Exactly.  I'll buy intrigued, I'll buy curious, I'll even buy self-service.... But instant lust in a character who tells you, "I've never looked at a human like that before.  But you're different, you're Shepard."  Flirty/suggestive dialogue aside, there's no love at first sight here.

Re: Love at First Sight for Garrus
...what the hell? Really?
Honestly, that could be applicable to any of the other romances but...for Garrus...that is just straight up projecting.

If anything, you could say he was building up feelings through the course of the two games. Feelings he probably didn't give any recognition to. It was only until after Shepard propositions him that they surface and he comes to some kind of realization. It sounds cheesy but at least it's a bit more...I dunno, realistic when taking into consideration what you're given with the 2 games.

But that's just my opinion. ;)

Heh. I feel sorry for him. I hope he enjoys this divine piece of art as much as you.

About the fanfics: I haven't read many of them, but the characters didn't bother me that much. I sometimes think, "...really?", but then I soothe my mind reminding myself this is happening in their world. I would like to write a fanfic, but it's hard to be original with so many fics floating around.

Never understimate the projection authors have in their fanfiction =p. Ideally, the best authors may tend to avoid this, but it's still pretty rampant. Of course only the Bioware writers themselves would do the best job, but personally when I'm roleplaying or writing I like to do exercises and research beforehand. Specifically, I like answer questionaires about the character in question and try to pit them into hypothetical situations and see how they would react. It really allows you to get a feel for the character, in my opinion.

Honestly, that could be applicable to any of the other romances

I'm not sure if that's really fair to say. I didn't get the love at first sight impression from any love interest.

Yeah... I can't bring myself to read most of those.  I'll take any iteration of FemShep you can throw at me, since it's all interpretation, but you gotta at least get Garrus right.  Hell, I have him not even being aware of how she trusts him.  He's a trained detective, so he's got to be good at reading people.  Doesn't mean he's turned his skills on Shepard, though.

Sadly, both DA and 4chan are huuuuuge sources of viruses as the clever ****** can now embed 'em in html, php and even sql these days. I do not work for Avira Anti-Virus, I get no kickbacks from Avira, but I highly recommend them. They've taken first place three years in a row for best anti-virus, and that's their free version.

The Axe Effect cracked me up.
